DIFFERENCE & USES OF
NUKE ALERT VS RADSTICKERS
- With a Nuke Alert Starts Chirping, You know to Leave NOW and to start moving away from the radiation source. It'll STOP Chirping when the radiation level drops.
- With a RadSticker, you can show an emergency worker That YOU HAVE NOT been EXPOSED and you are NOT going to be 'Detained for Treatment' You Are OUT OF HERE !!
- With a Radsticker you can show up at a Hospital and SKIP to the FRONT of the line for treatment because you can SHOW THAT YOU HAVE BEEN EXPOSED.
- With a RadSticker on your Childs ID, if they were sent home from school after a nuclear emergency, you could TELL *IF* THEY WERE EXPOSED.
- The Final Conclusion: You need BOTH the Nuke Alert Radiation Alarm & Meter and you need the Rad Sticker.

This is the 'bible' of public Nuclear Preparedness, both easy to
grasp and understand the threats and chocked full of practical and
easy to implement solutions to minimize radiation exposure toAsLowAsReasonablyAchievable.Originally
published by Oak Ridge National Laboratory, a Facility of the U.S.
Department of Energy.
"Readers will be astonished at the
wide variety of the problems which have excited his enquiry and the
cunning simplicity of some of his solutions. There is no other book
which offers so rounded a view of this large subject nor any on a
smaller scale which one could recommend with so few reservations."

The DoD's classic and comprehensive 'bible' on the effects of
Nuclear Weapons, written with extreme scientific detail, is a MUST
HAVE for anyone working in Homeland Security, Emergency Services or
in any other Civil Defense capacity. With this book you can KNOW the
effects of a weapon at any distance, including blast speed,
overpressure, prompt radiation, thermal radiation, fall out values
and timeline, along with everything else, like EMP. It can even tell
you potential crater sizes. The reverse is true as well. If
terrorists were to set off a nuke on the ground, measurement of the
crater would indicate the yield of the weapon used. Glass windows
broken at X miles away would also indicate the yield of the device
with this book. This book is especially important for information
services that must be able to provide accurate information in the
aftermath of a NUCLEAR ATTACK. If you want to know what a 5 Kiloton
stolen Soviet suitcase nuke would do, this book will tell you
without requiring that you know everything that nuclear scientists
know.

Radiation Survey Meter METER CALIBRATED IN APRIL 2011 by the ONLY Civilian Radiological Lab in the in the USA. Almost any meter on eBay is NOT CALIBRATED and will give you
improper readings.
Radiation meters SAVE LIVES. ONLY HIGH LEVELS of radiation are
fatal. That takes 300 to 500 Rads of Total Dose for 50%
of those exposed to die. This meters read radiation starting
at 30,000 times less than that. These same, field-proven for decades, FEMA Civil Defense radiation
meters and dosimeters are still in-use by thousands of

standards of the U.S. Nuclear Industry and the FEMA calibration
program.
*** IMPORTANT - How this Meter Reads Radiation *** This meter starts measuring at 10 miliRad / hour. The Nuke Alert Goes off at 100 miliRad /
hour. A RadSticker starts to change color at 1 to 5 Rad Total Dose This will show you if there is radiation even before the Nuke Alert
goes off.
This meter can EASILY measure not only the very LOW radiation near
the Fukushima Nuclear Reactor (10 miliRad / hour and higher), it can
even measure the high levels of radiation that would give you a
lethal dose in 45 minutes (500 Rads / Hour)
This meter is NOT for measuring common, normal, background
radiation, NOT for measuring radiation that might be in
food or water, or very small radio active particles that might
be on your clothing or skin, for that get the CDV-700 Radiation
meter (below), it will measure that low, but it won't measure
radiation any higher than 50miliRads/hour.
This meter MEASURES how MUCH radiation you are getting PER HOUR.
It does NOT measure your TOTAL Accumulated DOSE. FOR DOSE you
want something as simple as a RADSTICKER (above) or a CDV-742
DOSIMETER and CDV-750 charger (below)
The meter comes with an operations manual and it runs on 1 D

which are very small radioactive particles on you ).
This meter has a probe that you can detatch and use was a wand

The
direct-reading pocket dosimeter is a portable instrument designed to
measure the total dose of moderate and high levels of gamma
radiation. The instruments make use of a small quartz fiber
electroscope as an exposure detector and indicator. An image of the
fiber is projected onto a film scale and viewed through the eyepiece
lens. The scale is calibrated in roentgens (R) and may be read by
looking through the eyepiece toward a lamp or other source of light.
A CDV-750 dosimeter charger must be used in conjunction with the
dosimeter to set the instrument to zero. The charger may also be
used to read the scale or you can hold the dosimeter up to any light
source and look through it.
NOTE: the CDV-750 uses 1 D cell Battery (not included). The
CDV-742 Dosimeter is an 'electroscope' it is electro statically
charged by the CDV-750 charger. The Dosimeter does NOT use a
battery. No battery to replace, no battery to go bad, EVER!

Powerex MH-C800S Eight Cell Smart Charger
$54.95
This is by FAR my favorite charger, and its a
premium one and it does not GOOF UP. It charges each
battery individually, so you can put in 1 battery, 2, 3, 5, 7 or
8 at once. When you put it in, it starts to charge it. It
takes about 1 hours to charge one battery, but you can charge 8
at a time. 8 in 2 hours is about as good as 4 in 1 hour
for me. Also, there is an LCD display for each battery, so
you know when each one is charged. There IS a more
expensive version of this
one that does charge all 8 in 1 hour
BUT THIS one here is my favorite. The 1 hour charger has a
huge power supply that comes with it. This one has a nice
small 'wall wart' power supply.
(8 AA Batteries) Sanyo NEW 1500 eneloop 8 Pack AA Ni-MH
Pre-Charged Rechargeable Batteries $19.70
This link will let you buy 4 or 8 or 16 or 20
batteries at once, all at a discount. DO NOT buy the
charger they have. I don't like it. DO NOT by the
"XX" batteries, I have not put those though the ringer like
these ones. I have exhaustively tested the eneloop
batteries for years on my lab bench and in all of my personal
gear. They are the batteries I carry the most. These
eneloops can be charged and used up to 1500 times each.
That's a lot of charging. They have the PERFECT chemistry
for a AA NiMH battery. You can trust and depend on these.
If you want to buy Duracell AA NiMH batteries, buy
THEM HERE. DO NOT buy the Energizer brand of NiMH
batteries, they all STINK and are antiquated NiMH technology.
Shame on the pink bunny.
ZTS Computer Controlled Pulse Loading Mini Battery Tester $32.00
This is probably the most important tool on this
page. This lets you see how much energy is left in your
AA, AAA, C or D NiMH or Alkaline Battery. This is NOT some
'dumb' battery checker. This is the smartest one on the
market. All of those 'meter' battery checkers just check
the voltage and that is NOT a real way to check a battery State
Of Charge (SOC). To really test a battery you need to see
how much current it can deliver, this lets you know how much
active surface area of the battery is reactive and left.
This tester 'tugs' on the battery to measure its current
ability. Its also called Pulse Loading. When
this thing says you have 80% of your battery, you can bet on it.
When it says its near dead, its there. I have been
using this line of battery checkers since 2005 and it travels
with me everywhere I go (when I travel). What good are
batteries if you can't tell which ones are good and which ones
are bad.
I would really really prefer to stay 100% with AA
batteries and NOT use AAA batteries, but some handy things (like
head lamps - see below) use these AAA's and they are just too
awesome to not use them. Also many of the inexpensive
tactical lights use AAA batteries so they are handy for that
purpose. Try to buy things that use AA batteries instead
of AAA. Its not that AAA's are so bad, its just that the
AA is so much better and its a lot more standard.
8 pcs of Tenergy D Size 10,000mAh High Capacity High Rate NiMH
Rechargeable Batteries $54.06 * NEW
*
Some of you have written me and you just REALLY
REALLY want D Cell recharable batteries, DO NOT use the AA to D
cell sleeves unless its an emergency, because a D cell NiMH is
over 4x-5x the charge of a AA NiMH battery. These
are the D Cell Batteries I would buy, but then you also need a
special charger for the D Cell NiMH batteries I would buy.
NOTE: these are NOT the "pre-charged" or "stay charged" newer
NiMH technology like the Sanyo Eneloopes, you cannot charge
these and then go use them months or a year later in an
emergency, you must charge them and then use them, and charging
a full size D cell like this can take all day.
NEW: There are NEW Low Self Discharge Versions of this
Battery Here.
New C-Cell Low Discharge Tenergy Batteries are here
Tenergy V-9688 Super Universal LCD Battery Charger with USB Port
$31.99* NEW
*
This charger does AA to D cell size, plus 9 volt
batteries. I do NOT like it as much as I do the POWEREX
AA/AAA charger above. I only use this one for charging D
cell batteries, and it can take a good 8 hours, more or less
depending on the state of charge of the battery, to charge up D
Cell NiMH batteries. Again, if you are just starting
out, get the Powerex above and the Sanyo Eneloop batteries, if
you really must have D cell batteries than get the batteries
above and this charger. It'll make a good backup AA
charger for you as well in case you break, bash, smash, flood
your other one. 2 is 1, 1 is none.
Sanyo Eneloop Spacer Pack: 4 Pack of C-size and 4 Pack of D-size
Adapters $24.95 * NEW
*
NO NO NO NO Do NOT BUY...NOT Harris Approved
unless its for a 3rd level backup. a AA NiMH battery is
about 2000-2200mah, a good NiMH D Cell is 10,000+mah. 1st
you should have D Cell Alkaline Batteries, your next backup or
option is D Cell NiMH Recharable Batteries (Tenergy Above) only
if you ran out or lost those would you even consider using these
shells. There are here because I get asked about them A
LOT ! Some times the springs in your D Cell device don't
mate up with the end of the AA in the shell. There are
LOTS of issues, but they do work as a 3rd level backup to what I
mentioned. Keep this in mind. These 'shells' are
about 1/4th the price of buying the above charger and 8 real
NiMH batteries. Get the real thing.
Energizer L91BP-8 Lithium AA Photo Battery (8-Pack) $15.26 * NEW
*
I talked in detail at the end of the show that
the stuff in your 'go bag' or 'emergency' kit should have
Energizer Lithium AA batteries in it. They have the
longest shelf life, the most power, the best heat and cold
tolerance and they are the lightest batteries there are. (these
are NOT rechargeable). If you are getting stuck with one
battery, you want to get stuck with this one. You use the
rechargeable ones when you are home in a disaster and you can
recharge them from your car. When stuck in the wild, use
these blue and silver Energizer Lithium Batteries. You can
also get
"AA Ultimate Photo Lithium Battery 24 Battery Bundle for $40.25

Rock Solid Battery Holders Storacell by Powerpax "AA" 12 Pack Battery
Caddy, Yellow - Holds 12 "AA" Batteries $4.95+
These are the most awesome battery holders I have
ever come across, I use them all the time, AA, AAA, C, D, 9volt,
CR123, you name it, they have holders for the batteries or sets
of the batteries. Want to hold 12 AA battts ? they got it, want
to hold 6? or 4? they have it. This link will
give you an entire page of ones to choose from. Stay with
the POWERPAX brand, its 100% Harris Approved.
Duracell 813-0807 800 Watt DC to AC Digital
Power Inverter $41.99 IF this is
SOLD OUT on Amazon, get the Cobra Below!
The 400 watt one is only $10 less, this is 800
watts and is a much better buy, runs at 150 watts through the
cigarette lighter or 800 watts when clamped on the battery.
Leave the car idle and you can run your refrigerator or freezer
(one at a time) on this inverter. The BEAUTIFUL thing
about this inverter is the display, it gives you the voltage in,
out and POWER (in watts) that you are drawing at the time.
So you know if you are sipping power and can leave the car off
all night or if you are being a power HOG and have to leave it
idle. Nothing like instrumentation. Use this
alternate link if the one above is sold out.
(the 800 is sold out,
get the 400 at the alternate link !!!
-Steve )
IF you can't get the Duracell one above, get this one. It
does not have a display on it like the Duracell one...but it
works great. I also can't say enough about how good the
Duracell 400 watt inverter is (see link above). It works
great, plus it comes with the cigarette lighter plug. Its
OK to have a good inexpensive 400 watt inverter and a good
inexpensive 800 watt inverter. 2 is 1, 1 is NONE.
you need a backup and 400 watts of power is a LOT of power when
you are in a black out. Don't turn your nose up at
400 watts.
BESTEK 150 Watt Power Inverter WITH 2 USB 3.1A charger $21.09
This is one of the sweetest little inverters I
have found. It puts out 150 watts AC (the most you can via
just a cig lighter socket) AND it has TWO USB outputs and ONE of
the outputs is 2.1 amps (for iPads and new smart phones) and it
has a 1amp socket for all other USB Charging. Note: cheap
USB chargers are 0.5 amps, this one is 2.1 and 1.0.
If you can only afford to get one inverter, get this one.
You'll have to charge your phone / pad in the car and not in the
home, but that's better than no charge at all. You can
still run an extension cord from here to inside the house to run
some LED lights or SMALL fans. Don't even think of powering your
refrigerator or freezer from this, get the 800 watt one above.
If your car does not have a 12 volt power outlet that is always
on, then you'll need to get the RoadPro 12V Battery Clip On
Adapter Below (its $5.02)
BESTEK
300 Watt Power Inverter WITH 2 USB 3.1A charger $25.09
This is exactly the same inverter as above but
its got a cable on it to go into the cigarette lighter socket
and its a 300 watt inverter. Double the power for only
about $4.00 more money PLUS it still has the TWO USB Chargers on
it, at 2.1 amps and 1.0 amps.
Duracell 175-Watt Pocket Inverter with 2.1-Amp USB Port $42.04
Of the small inverters, the highest quality, with the smallest
size is this Duracell inverter. Yes. I own it. It
has the smallest profile and it also has ONE 2.1 amp USB port on
it. Not two USB ports. Its the one that travels with
me in my laptop bag all the time. Size matters.
This is also the most expensive inverter of this class but that
is because of its size and quality.
Steven Harris on Light - What do you need in Light ?? -
Important to Read.
You need 3 types of lights:
1. Small Light: 1/2 watt or less (30 lumens or less)
flash lights for doing small things. Reading, looking in
drawers, walking around the house etc..This is the most common
light you will use. I also call this "Necessary Light"
because you are only using the necessary amount of light needed,
not too much light.
2. Emergency Light: 2, 3 watts or more LEDs, 80,
180, 250, 400 lumens for finding lost children in the night type
of stuff. Tactical lights on guns fall into this
category as well.
3: Room light or Area Light. Something you can put
in a room with 4 people and light the place up decently because
you are going to be there and you have energy to spare. If
are charging D Cell batteries from your car, you have energy to
spare.
Most of you know I'm not a big fan of energizer,
but they have it 100% Correct in this 7 LED headlamp. Its
has red LEDs and lots of bright white LEDs for near and far, it has 4
different modes it switches between and it has a REAL PHYSICAL
SWITCH. So when its OFF, it is really OFF. Its not
'on' but drawing a small amount of current waiting for you to
press the 'on' button. That is called a 'soft on'.
This head lamp has a HARD Switch that turns stuff 100% on or
100% off. It has low light mode for long battery life and
it has a LIGHT 'EM UP mode for plenty of light NOW. Its
made for contractors so its durable as heck and can take a
beating. It
does run on 3 AAA batteries. I wish it was AA's, but its
not. So make sure you get some of the Eneloop AAA
rechargeable batteries above. This is an excellent "Small
Light" and the bright mode is good, but not quite emergency
light bright, but close. If you are running AAA battery
items in a small 'kit' then this is the perfect light to go with
the Maglight XL-200 AAA Light below.
Maglite XL200 LED Flashlight, Black - Brightest Maglight in
Existence $34.45 *NEW*
Like the above energizer head lamp, this flashlight runs on 3
AAA batteries. Its the brightest maglight flashlight
made and its very small and hides in the bottom of your pocket
until you want to light up something like its daylight.
This would make vampires run for cover and smoke. Its 172
Lumens...most tactical flashlights use to be 80 lumen.
This is over double that. I've been using this flashlight
for the last 7 months on a daily basis and have fallen in love
with its quality and its performance. I run this on 3 AAA eneloop batteries
all the time. This main
use of this light is for 'finding a lost child'. Its too
much light for normal stuff. Its an emergency light.
If you are running AAA batteries in a small, portable kit, then
this is the perfect flashlight to compliment the Energizer Head
Lamp (above)
Fenix HL21 White LED Headlamp, 1AA, 90 lumens $30.92*NEW*
Simple Simple Simple is what this is. 1 AA Battery, 90
lumens (more than bright enough) and a simple ON/OFF and only 1
Strap, and the diffuser flips over the light if desired for
close up work. The Energizer Head Lamp (above) and the
Maglite XL200 (above) are BOTH AAA battery powered. I
wanted you to have a AAA headlamp and flashlight option and I
wanted you to have a AA headlamp and flashlight option. So
I found and got this AA headlamp and it has been a real trooper
for me. Its going with me when I travel. One thing I
LOVE about it, its got a 3 Lumen mode on it (just necessary
amount of light) and it'll run for about 53 hours on 1 AA
battery in that light mode. This headlamp will work good
(2 is 1, 1 is none) with the MagLite 2AA and 3AA flashlights
(below)
Well I had to put a AA flashlight in the mix and
here it is. The 2 AA flashlight I use the most, the
maglight LED flashlight. It has a dim mode, a bright mode,
a flashing mode and you can unscrew the cap off and use the cap
as a base to hold up the flashlight like a candle stick and the
bare LED lights up the whole room like a candle would, but it
does it for 31 hours on low on 2 AA batteries.
The important thing about this is that it SIPS energy (for 31
hours) on low and it will provide 'enough' light in an entire
room or more than enough light when directed onto something, plus
its got its bright mode for finding something outside in the
dark. This is an excellent 'Small Light' and a pretty
'emergency light'. Its an ok 'room light' because the cap
comes off and its like a candle.
MagLite SP23MRH 3-AA Cell Mini LED Flashlight $21.95
*NEW*
The 2 AA maglight directly above is awesome, its
great, its fine. This one is brighter and it uses 3 AA
batteries instead of 2 so its got more brightness, its got
longer battery life (because it has 3 batteries) and its a bit
longer (by one cell) than the one above. Also, on
Amazon its only available in camo color, but that's cool.
This is a 3 Watt LED light just like what is in their 3D cell
flashlights, except it will use your AA recharable batteries,
and your alkaline batteries and your AA lithium batteries.
If I had to pick the 3 cell or the 2 cell, I'd take the 3 cell,
if weight was imperative like it is for some hikers, take the 2
cell one above. This is an excellent 'Small Light' and a pretty
'emergency light'. Its an ok 'room light' because the cap
comes off and its like a candle.
Mag-Lite ST3D016 3-D Cell LED Flashlight, Black $25.25
* NEW
*
We increasingly live in a AA / AAA battery world
and we have a great deal of valuable & reliable tools that use
these batteries. a AA NiMH can have ~2200mah of capacity,
the above NiMH D cells have 10,000mah and a Duracell D cell
alkaline is about 14,500mah and in 8-10 years (the date on the
battery) it will still have 82%-85% of its energy if stored at
room temperature. So if there an a battery you have to put away
and not use it till you darn well need it then its a Duracell D
Cell Alkaline battery. So here is the awesome flashlight
to go with the batteries. This is an "Emergency Light" It
also qualifies as a "Room Light" because the cap comes off and
it stands up like a candle. This light is 131
Lumens...which is MORE than bright enough. Do not get
caught in the 'brighter is better' trap.
Coast HP17TAC High Performance Focusing 615 Lumen LED Flashlight
with Tactical Strobe $66.55
* NEW
*
If you do want to play the brighter is better game, then this
flashlight from Coast will do it. Preppers, the $25
maglight above is PERFECT. It will light your house and
work area just fine. If you are Law Enforcement or Search and
Rescue then you might consider this flashlight because it too
uses 3 D Cell batteries but its 615 Lumens, about 3x more than
the maglight flashlight. This light also focuses from a
bright FIELD of light, lights a whole room up EVEN, to a spot
light that goes the distance. For preppers on a budget,
don't get this.
Rayovac Sportsman LED Lantern $28.79
* NEW

There are 1120 reviews of this on Amazon, 855 are 5 or 4 Stars !!
You need 3 types of lights. 1. Small Light: 1/2 watt or less (30

Reading, looking in drawers, walking around the house etc..
2. Emergency Light: 2, 3 watts or more LEDs, 80, 180, 250,

are going to be there and you have energy to spare. If are

D Cell Tenergy batteries above just perfectly. This is a
'room' type of light. Max output is 240 lumens.
Coast 4 D Cell 375 Lumen LED Lantern w/ Varible Brightness
$37.99
* NEW
*
I had to put this up here because the light is so awesome.
The Rayvac is awesome too, and at a better price. The
advantage of the coast is not that its brighter, but it is, but
its got a varible brightness knob on it. You can turn it
up and down to any brightness you like. Historically
I have always liked Maglights, Rayovac Lights and I've been
using Coast lights since 2006. Coast is an even
higher quality than maglight, but don't forget, maglight is more
than good enough. This lantern also uses 4 D Cells where
the Rayovac uses 3 D cells.
Lights of America 2326LED-LF4-24
4-Watt Power
LED G16 Globe Bulb, Bright White $9.65
4 Watts is MORE than enough in a dark room.
This has a light output of about 240 lumens, that's brighter
than many 80 lumen tactical lights. When you use this bulb
you are SIPPING energy off the inverter and the car battery.
That is what you want to do. You are not trying to light
the whole darn house like it was before the blackout. You
want 'enough' light in the room. Put one of these in 5
rooms and you're drawing 20 watts. This LED bulb will do
it well. I've used it for several years. This is an
excellent "Room Light" Note: on Amazon it says
its a 2 watt light, its really a 4 watt light. See below
for real 2 watt LED lights.
Feit Electric 2 WATT Accent LED A15 Bulb, Clear $11.80
This is fast becoming one of my new favorite LED light bulbs.
I have had this burning in my bedroom constantly for about 2
months and so far its rocking. This really is a 2 watt
light bulb putting out the same light as a 25 watt light bulb.
Its light output is 150 lumen, a typical tactical flashlight on
a gun is at least 80 lumens, so this is bright. This is
the clear bulb, so you get to stare directly at the bright
LED's, if you don't like this, then
get the FROSTED VERSION of this Light Here.
7 Watt LED Bulb, Warm White $10.99
This LED bulb is about 400 lumens (4x brighter
than above) and its almost what I could call 'too bright'
because its using 7 watts when you could be using 2 watts.
However if the above light is sold out, get this one, its a good
bulb and it'll really light up a room. Might be a better
bulb to use if you had to work on something like a car. If
you had to use an incandescent bulb to make this much light,
it'd be about a 60 watt bulb. So this is very efficient.
This is an excellent "Room Light"
PowerGen Dual USB 2A 10w (fast) Heavy Duty Ouput Car Charger -
White $9.99
This is made by the same company as the charger
above, this is a 12 volt charger to charge your high power USB
devices from your car. This too has a 2amp and 1amp
charger ports on it. I use this all the time, it
charges my android phone very well, make sure you have
plenty of cables (and spares) from the cables I have listed
below. Also, I prefer my chargers to be WHITE so I can
find them in the dark / low light easier than a black charger.

New Trent iTorch IMP52D 5200mAh External Battery Charger for
ANYTHING USB! (Improved version with 15% more compact size at
5200mAH than IMP500) $33.95
This is a portable rechargeable lithium battery,
you charge it up from your car or home and then you can later
charge up your phone or ipad from it. Its a HUGE battery.
An iphone4 has a battery that is 1420mAH, this is 5200mAH.
That's over 3.5x as big. A smaller cell phone would have a
750mAH battery in it, so you can recharge that with this about 7
times. I like this one, its the right size physically, its
big brother at 12,000mAH is a lot bigger, and I think its
too big, but it'll power your iphone for an entire week.
This is something I use about once a week, because that is about
how often I forget to plug in my android phone at night to
charge it up, so in the morning when I'm leaving, I need
something to charge the phone as I'm out and about.
Your cell phone or smart phone is a life line of communications,
contacts, information and tools. This will keep your phone
running when a disaster happens as well as allowing you to store
energy for your cell phone during an extended disaster.
Before I started using this one, I was using this
DURACELL ONE for about 1.5 years, I had 2 in my truck all
the time, but this one is my favorite one now for the price and
size, the Duracell ones were only about 1800mah. 5200mah
for $34 is better than 1800mah for $19
Azend Group Envizen Digital 7-Inch Handheld Digital TV/DVD
Player with Built-in Tuner, Carrying Case and Car Adapter $91.30
OMG this thing came with EVERYTHING. 120V
power, DC 12 volt cable, antenna, antenna adapter, video IN
cables (for game system) plus its a DVD player.
I have been looking for a portable TV for over a year, and they
ALL STUNK. I could not get one, could not recommend one
till I found, bought and played with this one. It draws
ONLY 9 Watts of power. Its reception is "DARN GOOD" with
the little antenna that comes with it but I bought
THIS ANTENNA for $8.50 With the external antenna (the $8.50
one) this thing picks up a huge amount of channels, and the TV even
came with the antenna adapter to go from a large external
antenna (coax screw) to a push type F connector. This is
NOW MY Storm and Disaster TV. THIS SHOULD BE YOUR #1 STORM
AND DISASTER TV, and its a DVD player for the kids too. 9
WATTS...that is an insane small amount of power. The TV
also has an internal battery will
last 2.5 hours...but with me it'll always be on one of my
external batteries. TV will be your #1 source of
news and information in a disaster.
If the 7" one is sold out, get the 9" version here. This TV will be your
#1 TV, I guarantee it. I cannot say how BEYOND IMPRESSED I
am with this thing. <HARRIS PHOTO> See what I do with this. Click here.
Wagan 4-Way 12V Automotive Socket Extender
$10.46
Invariably you are going to plug in more than one
thing into your car's 'cigarette lighter' or 'power port' and
you are going to want a very good, strong and sturdy power
outlet. You plug this into your car outlet and now you
have 4 heavy duty power outlets. This has been one of my
favorites for years, it features big contact plates inside that
are all nickel plated and the case is made of a strong plastic.
Roadpro 12V Battery Clip-On and Cigarette
Lighter Adapter $5.02
If you have a car old enough it might not have a
12 volt power outlet in it that is on all the time, it might
require the key to be in the 'on' position, which draws a lot of
other power, so you don't want to do that. You just open
your hood, clamp this on your car battery and you have a
cigarette lighter power outlet ready to go. Plug in the
inverter, run the power cord inside the house, plug in your cell
phone and LED lights and small fans and you have light,
communications and cooling.
Mediabridge - USB 2.0 A-Male to Micro-B Cable (6
Feet) $5.99 USB to USB-MICRO cable
This cable has 982 5Star Feedbacks and this is a
$25 cable at Best Buy. This cable is used to charge your
modern cell phone. Your modern smart phone / cell phone
will either be a USB-MINI or a USB-MICRO connector. You
use this with the USB output on the BESTEK inverter above OR on
the PowerGen USB DC or AC chargers above. This cable (6
feet) is long enough for you to talk on the phone while its
being charged from the wall or car.
(read about where to have chargers and cables
below in the MINI cable description)
You need an AC and a DC charger at home, in your car and at
work. You need a set at all 3 locations. That way
you move the phone from location to location, there is always a
charger there. If you are at work, and you have to hop in
a car with someone else, then you have a DC cable you can take
with you. If you are at home and your home charger dies...
then you have a spare in your car. 2 is 1 and 1 is none.
This cable (6 feet) is long enough for you to talk on the phone
while its being charged from the wall or car.
Micro USB Retractable Cable - Ideal for Any Micro USB Powered
Device
Its only 2.5 feet long, but its compact as heck,
convenient as heck and durable a s heck. I just got back
from a weekend of conventions and I carried this in my pocket
with the Trent iTorch Battery (above) and ended up using it with
this cable for half the day on my android phone because I used
it so much from 6am to 9pm each day that the battery would
not last. This cable is long enough to talk on the phone
from the Trent iTorch, its long enough to charge the phone at
night, to charge the iTorch at night, its NOT long enough to
talk on the phone w/ it plugged into a car adapter.
StarTech 1, 3 or 6-Feet Micro USB Cable - A to Left, Right Angle
Micro B or Straight Angle $5.79
Ok.. I have a new favorite cable supplier, just
click on this link You can get a cable that goes into your
android micro USB charger port at a LEFT angle, RIGHT angle, or
Straight, you can get it 1 foot long, 3 feet long or 6 feet
long. You pick and choose what fits your and your phone
the best and its on this page.
This is a very high quality apple iphone/ipad/ipod cable, and
approved by Apple itself. Yes, there are some cables
that are cheaper, but look at their feedback, they stink, there
is nothing more expensive than a cheap cable!
NewAir AI100S Portable Ice Maker (White) $169.95
oh stop it. People are yelling at me all
the time that they must have SOMETHING to keep stuff cold in a
disaster. Ok. This is my favorite item for making
COLD. I've been using it since 2007. Its an ice
maker. Its average draw when making ice is only 120 watts
(I measured it myself). It has a brief spike to 750 watts
for exactly 2-3 seconds when it turns on its heater to get the
ice cubes off the ice cube maker. So you need to run it on
the 800 watt inverter above. Your car will need to idle
for about 30 minutes out of every 60 minutes you are using this.

NewAir AI100S Portable Ice Maker (Black) $169.95
This is the most efficient way to keep stuff cold
and to 'make cold'. You use electricity to directly make
ice with this unit, making cold air in a freezer to freeze ice
cube trays is a horrible waste of energy. This makes ice
directly from contact the refrigeration evaporator.
You make the ice, then you put it in a really good "5 Day"
cooler and keep your food / beverages cool. OR you put the
ice directly in your drink, that is the most efficient.
It makes 26.4 lbs of ice a DAY (24 hours), So about 1 pound per
hour, it holds just over 2 pounds of ice, so get the ice out
every 2 hours. It makes its first ice in about 10 minutes.
I am drinking a drink with ice made from one of these as I
am typing this. These ice makers are Harris approved.
You'll love the heck out of one. I use one everyday except
in the winter.

Superior Pump 91250 1/4 HP Thermoplastic Submersible Utility
Pump $47.99
This pump only draws 460 watts so it will work
off an 800 watt inverter or bigger just fine.... or you can
carry buckets up the stairs.
OMG... if you have a sump pump then you know exactly my feeling
when I say that NOTHING will screw up your day FASTER than sump
pump that is NOT working. I have a 1/2 HP sump in my
basement, but that's mounted permanently all the time. If
that one stops working then I have this great little 1/4 HP sump
pump to drop in the hole (well) to pump out the water.
This pump has a 1 1/4" inch pipe thread on it plus it has an
adapter that comes with it so it can pump to a garden hose.
This is the #1 best selling sump pump on Amazon. If you
don't have a back up sump pump, get one ! Get this one or
get one at Harbor Freight. They are TOO MUCH at Home Depot
or Lowes. Also, if you need to fill up your
emergency water barrels in your pickup truck from a lake, river
or stream.. this IS the pump to do it with from your inverter.
If this sump ran for 30 seconds, every 15 minutes (in a storm)
then on a typical marine battery it would last for over 2.5 days
120 Assorted Car Truck MINI Fuse 5,7.5,10,15,20,25,30 AMP $8.45
These are the MINI fuses... the smaller
ones than the bigger ones you might be thinking of. Most
new cars take these. Just look in your owners manual, look
in the fuse box and see if they are about the size of a quarter
(Maxi Fuses- large ones) or the size of a dime (the mini ones).
120 Piece Car Fuse Assortment (MAXI FUSES) $9.95
These are the MAXI fuses... the larger ones
that older cars will take. These are about the size of a
quarter, or just a bit smaller. Again. look in your car
manual for what size they take.
CAR Fuse Puller Tool $4.77
Those fuses can be wedged in the PDB (Power
Distribution Box) pretty tightly and close to each other.
This little tool makes it a lot easier to pull them out to see
if they are blown or to remove and replace the
fuses...especially those darn mini-ones.

Hey..want to know how much power your appliance
is using so you know what type of inverter to us on it, and
whether you need the car to idle. Get this power meter and
measure how many WATTS (W) and Kilowatt HOURS (KWH) your
appliance is using. KWH is total power used over time, WATTS,
your maximum watts drawn determines what size inverter you use.
When the refrigerator kicks on, you'll see the spike in power
draw for 2 or 3 seconds, then you'll see the amount of power
being used as it cools. This is an indispensible tool.
There is a
newer version of the meter HERE for $26.52. I
have one of each one ever made, and I still use this $20 version
one the most.
Oster 5838 ExpressBake Breadmaker, White COOL TOUCH $67.98
* NEW
*
This bread maker makes bread like a washing
machine washes cloths. Put the stuff in, push the button,
come back in 58 minutes and you have 2 pounds of HOT bread
READY to eat. Flour, water, sugar, salt, yeast.
THAT'S IT. This is the bread maker that I've used for 6
years and feature in the 90 minute video: Bread from Gasoline
(on http://www.USH2edu.com
) You can make 32 POUNDS of bread from 1 gallon of
gasoline and a generator. I also show in the video how to
make this off your car battery. Imagine that.. fresh HOT bread
from WHITE FLOUR (stores forever, at all grocery stores) and
from your car / truck battery. Next to my tortilla
emergency bread trick, this is the most awesome. If
you don't think this is the most darn awesome bread maker you
ever had I'll buy it off you. I have 4 of them... maybe 5.
I have to look and I use them in every LIVE Preparedness class I
give... I feed everyone in the class.
Casio Men's PAG240-8 Pathfinder Amazon Exclusive Triple Sensor
Tough Solar Digital Watch $189.99* NEW
*
Would you believe, that because of TSP, I've had
several people write me to ask me what watch I wear ?? Who'd of
thunk ? I wear a Casio Pathfinder Triple Sensor SOLAR
powered watch. I must of had it for 5 years, and this is
the newer one than the one I have. NEVER have a battery
issue because its Solar. Actually in dead of winter when
sun is so low I've had to put it in the window for an afternoon
to get a good charge for a week or two of operation. I've
used the compass function on a regular basis and I've used the
barometer tracking feature to tell me of the pressure is rising
or falling so I know what the weather is going to do. I am
very hard on watches and phones, so everything I buy is DURABLE.
$190 is not expensive when you think of having it for 10 years
or more.

Here is
the Fuels & Fuel Storage
stuff Jack and Steve were talking about on TSP
Show #11
This is my favorite fuel additive to making
gasoline more stable in storage. You add 1oz of PRI-G per
16 GALLONS of gasoline ONCE a YEAR and your fuel will stay good.
Listen to me talk about it on the show, current record holder
has 12 year old gas for large backup generator that is fine
after 12 years of storage. This is an excellent solution
to the issue of long term storage of fuel.
Diesel fuel is an incredibly stable fuel for
storage, its the preferred fuel for long term storage, however
diesel fuel can have a fungus grow in it that just makes an ugly
scum that will plug up everything. PRI-D prevents the
fungus, bacteria and algae from forming and keeps your fuel
clear and clean.
15 Gallon Water Storage Barrel $49.95
This is what a 15 gallon HDPE water barrel looks
like. Its tall and narrow, a bit shorter than a 55 gallon
drum and a whole lot smaller. This drum is made of EXACTLY
the same plastic as a red 5 gallon plastic gasoline can is.
This drum will hold gasoline PERFECTLY. This drum full of
gasoline will weigh about 100 pounds, just heavy enough that if
you are strong you can still heft it up and move it or roll it
around and stand it up where you want it. The drum is
incredibly durable. Its expensive here on amazon but it
lets you see it, try to find it locally around where you live.
Go to maps.google.com and type in Drums and Barrels City, State
and it'll find the local suppliers around you. If you have
to, you can order it here....but it'll be a lot cheaper to find
it locally.
Polished Zinc Cast Steel Drum Bung Nut Wrench with Angled
Handles, 12" Length $34.04
Despite this description saying its zinc coated
cast steel, I think this one is one piece cast aluminum.
I've never seen a steel one, all of the ones I have are solid
aluminum. This bung wrench has 4 heads on it which will
fit any type of drum you can possibly find... plus its got 2
wrenches built into the handle. This thing is heavy enough
to be a weapon. It'll last a life time, you won't break
it. This is the one I have and use the most and I am
telling you this is the one you should get.
3/8" Fuel Primer Bulb $18.93
MAKE SURE YOU BUY THE 3/8" BARB ON THE BULB !
This is a fuel priming bulb that you'll find on
most fuel tanks feeding an outboard motor for a small boat.
You squeeze it and it moves the fuel. This takes the place
of you sucking on a hose to get the siphon action going.
Just squeezing this bulb gets the fuel flowing and then you just
let it siphon from the 15 gallon drum or 5 gallon tank and into
your fuel tank of your generator or vehicle. Note:
The drum or tank needs to be HIGHER than what you are siphoning
into. Fuel won't siphon up hill, it goes down hill
only. So set the fuel tank in the bed of the pickup or on
the roof of the car or just put one drum on top of another drum
to get it higher than the fuel tank. You can find these
bulbs at Walmart or anyplace that sells boat supplies....or you
can get it right here on Amazon.com
Fuel Line Hose, 3/8" x 25 feet $22.49
This is automotive FUEL LINE. Its rated for
gasoline, or diesel, it'll last forever, its heavy and thick.
The 25 foot spool here on amazon is a GREAT price, or you can go
to Action Auto, Auto Zone, Pep Boys or any other car parts place
and get it by the foot. For 15 gallon drums, I suggest a 4
foot piece on the suction side and a 6 foot piece on the outlet
side. I do NOT even use hose clamps to hold the hose on
because it stays on so tight, plus if I want to I can quickly
swap lines to make one longer and one shorter or to put on a
longer piece of hose.

Here is
the Generator & House Hook Up
stuff Jack and Steve were talking about on TSP
Show #12 & Show #13
One 100 foot cable and one 50 foot cable should be good for most
people, that way you can run up to 150 feet any way you want.
You might run 50 feet into your house and 100 feet into your
neighbors house or you just might need all of the distance for
yourself, especially if you have an electric chainsaw (which I
love, because they are so simple, and always work without
gasoline). If you must have a
25 foot cord there is one for $22.92 but I do not think its
necessary, for that short of a distance a 14/3 orange cord will
work fine. Most of you will be FINE with 14/3 orange
extension cords from Home Depot but if you want the premium and
the best, then this is the extension cord for it. It is
very durable with a thick cover. Yes.. I own all of these.
Coleman Cable 02309 16/3 Vinyl Outdoor Extension Cord, Orange,
100-Feet $26.95
This is a 16/3 16/3 16/3 16/3
CORD !! It is THIN and LIGHT. At walmart they have a
120 foot version of this cord and its green. This is
designed for a LIGHT LOAD, thus, you don't need all that copper
and weight. Usually this is used for electrical law
equipment, like a weed whacker, they don't take very much power.
If you have an 800 watt or 400 watt or 150 watt inverter, its
not sending out very much power either. Why do you need a
thick cable to run from the inverter on your car and into the
home ? You don't. For those light loads this cord
will work fine. It's lighter and longer and cheaper.
3-grounded Outlet T-shaped Adapter, Orange $4.89
I told you that you'd recognize what I was trying
to describe on the radio as soon as you saw it.. this is it.
Stack these up into each other to make the best, most heavy duty
outlet strip you've ever had. Use these to split off
extension cords that you run into your house from the generator
or inverter that is outside.
Reliance
Controls PB30 L14-30 30 Amp Generator Power Cord Inlet Box For
Up To 7,500 Watt Generators $41.07
Instead of having a 'suicide' cord like I talked
about in the TSP Show on Generators and how hook up your
generator to your house, through all methods both dangerous and
illegal to the correct and legal ways of doing it, this box is
the start of one of the ways of doing it 100% legal and to
code....but you have to have an interlock on your panel to
prevent this socket from getting energized....because you can
stick your fingers in here if its energized and get shocked to
death, the idea is, this socket is dead, and you are plugging in
from your generator to this socket and into the electrical panel
of the house. There are 3 DETAILED PHOTOS of this box installed
in a house with a generator, click the link and LOOK at them.
DuroMax XP10000E 10,000 Watt 16 HP OHV 4-Cycle Gas Powered
Portable Generator With Wheel Kit And Electric Start $999.00
This generator is 240 volts, as well as 120
volts, its got very high ratings and feedback on Amazon, this is
a 10KW generator so it will power your entire house through the
transfer switch above and the inlet box and cables. I do
not own this generator but I would personally buy one based on
the price, the output and especially the reviews on Amazon.
I own a $1000+ Honda EU2000i, but I recognize that is not an
option for all of you, so I put this up here for you. You
are getting 10kw for the same price I paid for the Honda
EU2000i, that is because the Honda is a 'inverter generator' and
this is what I call a 'regular generator' make sure you listen
to my TSP show on generators.
DuroStar DS4000S 4,000 Watt 7.0 HP OHV 4-Cycle Gas Powered
Portable Generator $299.99
A simple, regular generator, like I talked about
on the show, at a good price, with very good reviews on Amazon.
Its 120 volts ONLY so it CANNOT be used to feed the above panels
and inlet connectors. You'll have to use extension cords
to do it the 'safe' way. I do not own this generator but I
would personally buy one based on the price, the output and
especially the reviews on Amazon. I own a $1000+ Honda
EU2000i, but I recognize that is not an option for all of you,
so I put this up here for you.
Do you have a 250, 500 or 1000 gallon propane 'pig'
sitting outside your house for your stove and furnace?? Well
than you have a tremendously large amount of fuel stored that will
NEVER go bad. You should be able to take advantage of
that. This is a PROPANE ONLY generator. Does NOT run on
gasoline, does NOT run on natural gas. This generator DOES
have 120 volt AC and 240 Volts AC output on it so you can power your
entire electrical panel and your entire house. See my
Generator Show #2 (above) regarding the different ways of hooking
this up to the house. Don't forget to change the oil every 100
hours !! Have spare oil and the ability to change it.
Champion Power Equipment 2,000 Watt 4-Stroke Gas Powered Portable
Inverter Generator (CARB Compliant) $595.00
The Yamaha inverter generator is the top of the line generator, its
also $400 more than this one. Champion has seemed to of done a
really good job at making a nice inverter generator at a decent
price. Its got nothing but great reviews. If you
need a nice small 2KW, very quiet, very portable generator sent to
you quickly because a storm is coming, this is the one.
If you want a more economical inverter generator, then this is the
one, if the top of the line Fijitsu is sold out and you need a
generator sent overnight to you now by Amazon Prime...then this is
the one.
Conntek 20611 Generator Power Cord 25-Foot 10/4 30 Amp 125/250
Volt 4 Prong Male Plug To 15/20 Amp Female Connector $85.99
Like Jack says, do NOT go cheap on your power
cables, its something you WILL regret and keep your power cables
for your generator and emergencies in a dedicated box next to
your emergency power setup. THIS cable is for going from the 240
output of your generator and it splits it into TWO seperate
120volt AC circuits. If you are not using the 240 volts to
feed your entire electrical panel (listen to the show!) then
you'll want some extra 120 volt AC output. This will
augment the 120volt AC that is already coming off your
generator.
Emergency Natural Gas Hookup for a Generator *DANGER*
This is the hookup I talked about, and WARNED NOT
TO DO on my Generator #2 TSP Show. Its can be
confusing to listen to this over the radio show if you
CLICK
HERE (or on the photo) I will show you all of the details,
parts and pieces of what you should NOT DO.
Suicide Electrical Cables for Back Feeding a House from a
Generator or Inverter
As I talked about in DETAIL in the show, these are called
suicide cables for a reason. They have 120 volts or 240
volts exposed on prongs on both ends of the cable. Plus
they can overload the single circuit they plug into and that can
heat up the wires or connectors and burn down your entire house.
Click on the link and I'll show you some of the connectors
that are used to make these cables... and I'm telling you to
have a certified electrician install a Legal Transfer Switch at
your panel to safely switch the power over.
STUPID STUFF
DO NOT BUY - DO NOT BUY !!
I give you examples of what to purchase, and WHY, and
what my
experience is with them but I keep on getting emails about other
things.
A lot of these things are STUPID and so now I'm giving you a
list
of STUPID things and telling you why they are STUPID so you can
make better, more informed decisions when you see stuff in
stores. I'M SERIOUS
- DO NOT BUY !!
Energizer Solar Rechargeable 9-LED Lantern $31.51
I'm sure some of you are salivating over this
solar powered, flashy, shiny gadget. Prepping is not about
'gadgets' its about knowledge and tools. This is worthless
solar Junk. Look at the specs. It runs for 165 HOURS
on 3 D cell Alkaline Batteries. If those are Duracells
that's about $3.00 in batteries. If it runs that light for
165 hours when fresh, it'll run the light for 132 hours in 8
years when the batteries reach their "date" and are at 80% of
original capacity. So 3 bucks gets your over 100 hour of
light over the next 8 years. Yet this 'gadget' has a
"Suckered you into it" solar panel that will give you 2.5 Hours
of LIGHT *IF* the solar panel gets a GOOD 5 hours of PRIME
sunshine on it. That means pointed at the sun, no clouds,
summer sunshine. Remember the sun is NOT the same
brightness all day, so 5 GREAT hours of sunshine is about all
you get in a day...maybe a bit more depending on the time of
year, so a good day of sunshine gets you 2.5 hours of light at
night and that's when you need a good 8 hours of light.
SUCKS...its a stupid gadget.
Solar 11-in-1 Battery Charger $24.98
Oh WOW... it charges AA, C and D Cell NiMH on its
built in Solar Panel. This has 'sucker' written all over
it. Lets look at the specs, 5 volts from the panel, so it
can really do 2 batteries at once, not 3, not 4 and its a MAX of
140ma output. That means MAX, summer, noon, pointed at the
sun. Its not computer controlled so its charge efficiency
will be low, 75% would be generous. AA NiMH Batteries are
about 2000mah, at 140ma @75% efficiency that would take 19 prime
solar hours to charge 2 AA batteries. There are about 6
'good' solar hours in a day (sun rise, noon, sun setting) so
that means this would charge your 2 AA batteries in about 3 days
if you kept it pointed at the sun every 30 minutes.
D cell NiMH batteries are about 10,000mah so that would take 96
hours to charge, which would be about 2 weeks of solar tracking
to charge them up. Seem like a good solar idea now?
Midland XT511 GMRS Two-Way Emergency Crank Radio $89.99
(heavy sarcasm) OMG how could it get any better,
its an FRS & GMRS 2 way radio, its a NOAA weather radio, its an
AM/FM radio, it even has 3 LED's in it for a flashlight, and it
has a clock and an alarm clock and it has a USB port and it runs
on 4 AA batteries and it even has a HAND CRANK feature in it so
I can wind it up, wind it up, wind it up, wind it up (tired
already) if there is no power. Plus its called a 'Base
Camp' radio. How cool is that, now I can call "Red 5 this
is Red Leader, Red 5 this is Red Leader, Come in Red 5".
Now I've seen 'some' crank up AM/FM radios that are decent.
It does NOT take a LOT of power to run an AM/FM radio on
RECEIVE. It takes a LOT of power to run a transmitter.
There are $20 GMRS radios that beat the crap out of this, that's
all you need, is a good GMRS radio (and I have a site coming for
that) and NOT a bunch of junk thrown all in, into one gadget for
$90 with a crank on it. The more things you see put
together into one item, the more you should RUN AWAY from it.
American Red Cross FRX3 Hand Turbine NOAA AM/FM Weather Alert Radio with Smartphone Charger - Red $54.99 Even if this has
5 stars on Amazon, I'd NEVER recommend it to anyone. Its 5
pounds of crap put into a 1 pound plastic box. Oh it looks
and acts really great when you are testing it, but when it comes
time to really use it you'll find that 'crank' feature and your
arm is not the light saber you thought it was.
Its got 'crank power', 'solar power', and "AAA battery" power.
Its an AM/FM and weather radio WITH a clock and an alarm clock
<wow> plus its also a flashlight and best of all (quiet please)
it has a USB port to charge your "Smart Phone". First of
all, the solar panel is so small its going to take a week of
sunshine, full sunshine, just to charge up its little internal
battery. Second it 'says' that it will power your phone
for 30 seconds of calling with 1 minute of cranking. Its
probably more like 5 seconds of calling with 1 minute of
cranking. 12 minutes of cranking, 1 minute phone call.
You are literally looking at 10+ hours of cranking to charge an
iphone. Plus this 'thing' is $55 and you can get a perfect
AM/FM radio for less than $10 [ Link to be inserted Here ].
Combine that with your car inverter (see class above) with the
USB Charger to FULLY charge your iphone in an hour or two, and
get the AA Eneloop batteries (above) and the PowerEx AA/AAA
charger (above) you really now have an infinite supply of radio
and light (flash lights above) and cell phone talking.
This just a 'pretty gadget' for suckers.
Ambient Weather WR-111B Emergency Solar Hand Crank AM/FM/NOAA Digital Radio, Flashlight, Cell Phone Charger with NOAA Certified Weather Alert & Cables
$39.99 Everything I said
above is true for this unit, stay away from these 'cranking
miracles'. Its no light saber. 10+ hours of cranking
to charge your iphone, with the iphone OFF! while you are doing
it. This thing has 607 reviews on it, and I'd still NEVER
tell you to get it. This is from one of the 1 Star
reviews, listen to what these FOOLS did, "Yesterday
during the worst of Hurricane Sandy we were without power. We
plugged our cell phone into the charger and started hand
cranking. We're handy people and we take care of our equipment,
so we were careful. First there was a creaking noise, some
resistance and a burned smell. Then the crank jammed and broke
off. So we were without cell and without radio in the emergency
situation for which we bought it!"
They literally thought these dumb piece of plastic was going to
keep their cell phone charged by cranking on it. Never did
they try it, never did they do it. They just established a
false sense of security into themselves because the 'bought a
box'.
Amateurs train until they get it right.
Professionals train until they cannot get it wrong.

ISBN:326 pages 5.5x8.5 inches [size]
Filled with every method of turning water into rotary horsepower. This book is not about the hydraulic power like what makes garbage trucks and construction equipment function. In this sense is we are talking about water power. It is incredible in its depth on water turbines and the whole variety of wheels that are in this field. It covers ALL of the paddle wheels, overshot, undershot, small, large, optimized and simple ones, from highly balanced water turbines to the most efficient Pelton wheels.

Harris Tip #1
Modified Sine Wave vs True Sine Wave Inverters ???
Why did I not mention true sine wave inverters in
my show ?? Because it does not matter. Modified sine
wave works JUST FINE. DO NOT believe all of the
stories on the net related to modified sine wave and electronics
and regular motors !! Electronics, especially laptops and
TVs run PERFECT on modified sine wave inverters. Take it
from me, I've done it since the early 1990's. I Steven
Harris, do not own one true sine wave inverter nor do I need to
spend 3x the money to get one. This web site is about what
WORKS.

Cobra CPI 880 800 Watt 12 Volt DC to 120 Volt AC Power Inverter
with 5 Volt USB output $48.65
Its my professional judgment that 800 watts and
1500 watts are where the sweet spot is for price and
performance. For $19 more than a 400 watt inverter you get
twice the output. This helps you with surges from
refrigerators or freezers and running a higher output from your
car IF you have to. Notice this inverter can be screwed
down.
Cobra CPI1000 1000W 12V DC to 120V AC Power Inverter with USB
Port $77.17
There are only 2 reasons I would buy a 1000 watt
inverter. 1st one is they are out of 800 watt inverters.
The 2nd reason is if I wanted a display. The front of this
inverter has a voltage and wattage LED display. The 800
watt inverter does not.
Cobra CPI 1575 1500 Watt 12 Volt DC to 120 Volt AC Power
Inverter $104.87
1500 watts is the major sweet spot for price and
output. For $100 to $130 you get 1500 watts of output.
This is about the same output as one circuit in your house.
Its more than enough power. If I run an electric chainsaw
on mine when mobile, it'll power most stuff in your house just
fine. Keep in mind that 1500 watts is a lot of power and
it will suck down your batteries quickly, but if you only need
15 minutes to brew a pot of coffee, this will give you enough
juice to do it quickly. This inverter also has the voltage
and wattage LED display on the front.
Cobra CPI 2575 2500 Watt 12 Volt DC to 120 Volt AC Power
Inverter $165.19
If 1500 watt inverters are out of stock, then get
this one if you must. Some people want to over size, and
this one will do that. This inverter is physically bigger
than the 1500 watt inverter, you'll need 0 AWG wires, 3 foot
ones, no longer. However, your application might demand
something bigger than the 1500 watt inverter, so I put this up
here as an option for you. This inverter also has the voltage
and wattage LED display on the front.
Harris Tip #2 Cobra VS Whistler & Other
Inverters.
Both are low priced inverters. I'm using
the 400 & 800 watt Cobra in my video, and the 1600 watt Whistler
in the battery video. Both have really great reviews and
some negative reviews, mostly from people who don't know what
they are doing and plug a coffee pot (huge load 1100+ watts)
into a 400 or 800 watt inverter and expect magic to happen.
One of the big difference is that most ALL inverters can handle
a surge of TWICE their power rating. So 400 can handle
800, 1500 can handle 3000 watts etc... Difference
between the two is the amount of time. The Cobra manual
says the surge time is 0.1 Seconds. In reality, its
probably a second or less. The Whistler is known for
handling up to a FULL 10.0 seconds of surge. This is all
over the net, but funny, not in their manual. I have to
call the factory. This can make the difference between
starting your refrigerator or freezer and not starting it.
Both are very good low end inverters that will work fine for you
in most situations.
Xantrex made a good inverter, but they discontinued their whole
line I was using and are only concentrating on more high end
inverters now. Duracell liked Xantrex so much they
licensed their design and manufacture them under the Duracell
name....but they are just not available in volume, only here and
there. So I'm stuck with owning, testing, using and
presenting to you the Cobra and Whistler inverters.
Whistler Pro-800W 800 Watt Power Inverter $49.01
Its my professional judgment that 800 watts and
1500 watts are where the sweet spot is for price and
performance. For $19 more than a 400 watt inverter you get
twice the output. This helps you with surges from
refrigerators or freezers and running a higher output from your
car IF you have to. Notice this inverter can be screwed
down. This inverter does NOT have a display on it.
Whistler Pro-1600W 1,600 Watt Power Inverter $128.39
1500 watts is the major sweet spot for price and
output, and this one is 1600 watts. For $100 to $130 you
get 1500+ watts of output. This is about the same output
as one circuit in your house. Its more than enough power.
If I run an electric chainsaw on mine when mobile, it'll power
most stuff in your house just fine. Keep in mind that 1600
watts is a lot of power and it will suck down your batteries
quickly, but if you only need 15 minutes to brew a pot of
coffee, this will give you enough juice to do it quickly.
This inverter also has the voltage and wattage LED display on
the front.
<HARRIS PHOTO> See what I do with this. Click here.
Whistler Pro-2000W 2,000 Watt Power Inverter $157.98
If the 1600 watt inverter is out of stock, get
this one, its only $29 more. If you want the extra 400
watts, then get this one. This inverter also has the
voltage and wattage LED display on the front.
Whistler Pro-2500W 2,500 Watt Power Inverter $191.17
Some people want to over size, and this one will
do that. This inverter is physically bigger than the 1600
watt inverter, you'll need 0 AWG wires, 3 foot ones, no longer.
However, your application might demand something bigger than the
1600 watt inverter, so I put this up here as an option for you.
This inverter also has the voltage and wattage LED display on
the front.
Whistler Pro-3000W 3,000 Watt Power Inverter $299.00
I'm not really sure why you'd spend $108 more for
just 500 more watts over the 2500 watt inverter. I have
this to illustrate how you can use a little intelligence in
purchasing an inverter to get the most ability for the best
price. This inverter also has the voltage and wattage LED
display on the front.
Duracell 400 Watt DC to AC Digital Power Inverter $39.73
I like the Duracell inverters because they have a
display for the voltage and wattage output but there are decent
400 watt inverters everywhere, at Walmart too. This one is
Harris Approved. Use it as your 2nd inverter on your home
battery bank (2 is 1, 1 is none) or use it on your small battery
bank system. It'll do just fine. On my home battery
bank, this one is ON all the time, the 1600 watt inverter is
OFF, and an LED light is always connected to this one and ON all
the time so I can find it when the power fails. The 400
watt inverter comes with BOTH the cigarette lighter plug cable
AND the battery clamp cables.
Duracell 800 Watt DC to AC Digital Power Inverter $69.99
IF this is SOLD OUT on Amazon, get the Cobra ABOVE!
(IF the 800 is
sold out,
get the 400 at the alternate link !!! -Steve ). The
800 watt inverter comes ONLY with the clamps that go to the car
battery. It does NOT come with cigarette lighter plug
cable.

Harris Tip #3 NEVER EVER buy a worthless "Trickle
Charger".
NEVER trust the recharging of your battery bank just to a
"Solar Panel". Buy one of these REAL chargers.
Computer controlled, 3 stage battery chargers that have the
ability to FULLY charge and maintain a marine battery, car
battery, golf cart battery etc...
Schumacher SE-1555A Automatic Elite Wheel Battery Charger $99.97
its NOT as big as you think it is, its only about
18" tall. It just looks like one of those big roll around
chargers, but that is what the output of this one is. 55 AMPS DC
into the batteries. Its a computer controlled 3 stage
smart charger. This is the one you get if you have 2, 4,
6, 8, 10 golf cart batteries in 1 bank and you want to put
energy back in them as fast as you can from a generator, or
other power source. If you just have 1, 2, 3, or 4 marine
batteries, you don't need this charger. This is also
available at Walmart, at Sears under the Diehard brand, but at a
higher price.
Schumacher PSC-12500A DSR ProSeries 125/15-40/2 Amp 6/12 Volt
Automatic SpeedCharge Hybrid Battery Charger/Starter $91.10
The problem with the 55amp SE-1555A above is that
you can't pick it up with one hand. You can the 30 amp
xc103 below. I'm starting to think that this 40AMP
"PRO" series one Schumacher is selling is a very very happy
medium between the 30 amp charger and the 55 amp charger.
The 55 amp charger might work just great for home..but it stinks
for it to go into the tool box of your mobile battery bank I
tell you how to make. I think this might be the best
charger to go into your mobile power box.. .why is there a
charger in your mobile battery bank box ??? See what
I do in the video below... you will be impressed.
Schumacher XC103 SpeedCharge Battery Charger with Engine Start
$72.08
This is the 30 amp version of the above, and its
small and light. One hand easily picks it up. Its a
computer controlled 3 stage smart charger. This is the
best charger you'll need if you just have marine batteries for a
battery bank. This is all MOST of you will need. It
is also the charger that I put in the rear box of my truck in
case I want to charge my mobile battery bank, or truck
batteries, from ONE ANOTHER, or from the house or a generator.
You'll have to see the video. Its very flexible.
This is also available at Walmart, at Sears under the Diehard
brand, but at a higher price.
Schumacher SC-10030A SpeedCharge Automatic Charger and
Maintainer $78.65
If you can't get the XC103 30 amp charger above.
This is the SAME THING just in a different case. Its the
one they made before the XC103 and they are still selling it.
The BOTH have the SAME features. EITHER will work perfect
for you. If the XC103 is sold out, or you can't find it,
or if this is the only one you see in Wal-Mart, then its fine.
Schumacher XCS15 SpeedCharge Ship 'n Shore Battery Charger
$46.62
Ok. So you are on a budget, and you have 1 new
marine battery or one old car battery. Get this charger,
its 15 amps, it'll charge your battery up. Then use a 400
watt watt inverter on the battery, the Road Pro clip on battery
adapter and the wagan 4 way outlets. Plug into here your
phone car DC charger, or into the inverter your phone AC
charger. You can also run some 5 WATT or LESS CF bulbs or
LED bulbs on the inverter for a long time. 1 battery, 1
charger, 1 inverter, some DC outlets and you'll have extra
battery for your phone, tablet, radio, SMALL TV (like 12", or 7"
or 4" screen) and a few small lights.
see the LED bulbs. I have not seen this charger on local store
shelves.
Schumacher XC12 SpeedCharge 12 Amp Battery Charger $44.86
If you can't get the XCS15 above, then this 12
amp version of it will work for you just fine. They both
have a display on them and the same features, one is just for
the 'marine' market and one is not. So one is blue, and
one is grey. This charger is also 12 amps instead of 15,
but you won't notice the difference. I have NOT seen the
XC12 at local Walmarts.
Schumacher XC10 SpeedCharge 10 Amp Battery Charger $39.74
If you are further down on a budget and want no
frills, then this charger will work for you. Its a 10 amp
charger and will charge up a marine battery all the way for you.
Its very budget oriented. This is also available at Walmart, at
Sears under the Diehard brand, but at a higher price.
Schumacher XC6 SpeedCharge 6 Amp Battery Charger $29.77
This is even lower in price, its a 6 amp charger
and will charge up a marine battery all the way for you.
Its very budget oriented. Under NO circumstances would I
go lower than a 6 amp battery charger. DO NOT buy 1
or 2 amp 'trickle chargers' EVER. They are not intelligent
and they usually end up destroying a battery PLUS they NEVER
have the ability to bring a discharged battery back up.
This is also available at Walmart, at Sears under the Diehard
brand, but at a higher price.
(QUIET) Marinco Battery Charger 2608A Marine $71.62
There have been a FEW people who live in
apartments and actually have their battery and charger sitting
next to their desk and they have complained about the fan noise
of the chargers. They are quiet, but you can hear them.
Some people have wanted a 100% silent, no moving parts charger
and this is one of those. It does not hum, it does not
have a fan. This one is only 6 amps, which is
enough to keep your battery charged. Its an intelligent 3
stage charger as well.
If you want its 10 amp bigger brother then click here.
Harris Tip #4
Under NO circumstances would I go lower than a 6 amp
battery charger. DO NOT buy 1 or 2 amp 'trickle
chargers' EVER. They are not intelligent and they usually
end up destroying a battery PLUS they NEVER have the ability to
bring a discharged battery back up
Optima Batteries 8052-161 D31M BlueTop Dual Purpose Battery
$224.46 (75Ah)
I think it would be better for you to get 2 GC2
Golf Cart Batteries, or a Duracell AGM battery, or a Duracell or
Energizer Marine Battery (all from Sams Club). However, if
you are forced to buy one here then this is the top of the line.
Optima Spiral Wound AGM batteries are famous for durability,
long life and depth of discharge. Technically the blue top
is their marine battery, however for a home battery the blue or
the yellow will work fine. These batteries NEVER need
their fluid checked or filled. They are 100% sealed.
These are PERFECT for an apartment so you'll have no acid
issues.
Read what I have for the yellow top below, but a 31 Group Marine
Battery from Walmart will only cost you < $100. Its not an
AGM battery, but its a good flooded lead acid battery and will
do the job. Expect 5 years of life from it.
Optima Batteries 8050-160 D31T YellowTop Dual Purpose Battery
$229.24 (75Ah)
The Optima Yellow top is for deep draining
applications like RVs and Cars with a lot of accessories on
them. These batteries NEVER need their fluid checked or
filled. They are 100% sealed. They are so 'acid
safe' that its legal to ship these on a plane.
You WILL find cheaper Optima batteries in Sams or Costco but
they are NOT the D31 series batteries I have here, they'll
have a smaller capacity and will be 55Ah or 38Ah
If you insist on getting a top of the line
battery that will last 10 years, that UPS will deliver to your
door step in 2 day for free (if you are Amazon Prime Member)
than this is the one. One of these and the chargers above,
plus a 400 watt inverter and some DC outlets will give you all
of the cell phone, ipad, small TV, radio, AA recharging you
could want for a disaster.
This is a good battery that offers a little more capacity at a
little lower price than the Optima batteries. This
73 pound battery is an Amazon Prime item and it will get shipped
to you (if you are a prime member) for FREE in 2 days. It
will show up overnight for $3.99 extra and on Saturday for $8.00
extra.
This box can be an exceptionally good option if you have a
'FLOODED" deep cycle or other NON-AGM battery in your house or
garage. You can strap down or tape down the box lid and
that can help keep little hands and paws away from the battery.
This would make a flooded battery more acid safe, but not as
acid safe as an AGM battery.
Battery Cables 2/0 AWG in Red, Black, 6
inch & 12 inch
I show you how to make your own battery
cables with wire from home depot and connectors from an auto
store or on amazon (see below) however IF you do NOT want to
make them and you just want to buy them now, then buy these
cables, and I found them in RED and in BLACK for you.
These are 2 AWG cables. THEY ARE THICK and what you need
especially if you are running a 1000+ watt inverter. If
you are in a hurry, BUY the cables.
Grape Solar GS-S-100-TS 100 Watt Monocrystalline Off-Grid PV
Solar Panel $277.00
Listen Luke, this ain't your light saber.
It a 100 watt panel AT MOST, at high noon, in the summer time.
The 30 amp charge controller below is putting about 400 watts of
power into your batteries BUT IF you are going camping, or far
away, and your truck is going to sit and be your battery bank
then this will help charge up your battery bank all day long in
the sunshine without you having to turn on your vehicle to
charge the batteries. MANY MANY people wanted a solar
option so I am including this in the podcast and the video.
Lots of places to get solar panels on the net, but this is the
one I selected to use on the videos and in this project.
Sunforce 60032 30 Amp Digital Charge Controller $99.04
This is the main charge controller that is going
in between the batteries in the front of the vehicle (and
alternator) and your battery bank in the back of the vehicle.
This will ISOLATE your back battery bank from your front battery
bank. (see video or podcast for why). This will also
very accurately and carefully charge your rear batteries with
the voltage from the alternator when the car is running or you
are driving down the road. Its a charge controller,
charging batteries is what it does. Available on net and
at Marine Stores at much higher prices.
<HARRIS PHOTO> See what I do with this. Click here.
Sunforce 60031 10 Amp Digital Charge Controller $34.78
This is exactly the same controller as above but
this is a 10 amp charge controller. This is for the
solar panel that is on the truck to be used for charging the
battery bank. You COULD put a big DPDT switch in front of
the 30 amp controller and switch between the alternator and the
solar panel, but a good DPDT switch is at least $20, then there
is at least 6 connections on the switch and where to problems
come from ?? switches and connections !! I think its simpler
just to have 2 charge controllers. If the 30 amp takes a
dump you can also use this 10 amp one to charge the battery bank
from the vehicle.
<HARRIS PHOTO> See what I do with this. Click here.
Sunforce 7 Amp Charge Controller $17.37
If you don't want to spend the $35 above for the
nicer charge controller for the solar panel, this is a good
simple one at half the price. Get this. It just as a
few LED's on it but it lets you know what is going on.
There are lots of generic < 10 amp solar chargers out there.
Some are at harbor freight, but I selected this one for its
quality and for its price.
Schumacher PC-6 120AC to 6A 12V DC Power Converter $17.54
Picture this. Your car is in the apartment
parking lot, you have a 120 foot 16 gauge cord running from the
inverter in your car up to your 3rd floor apartment (or maybe
240 feet !). You have LED lights, your phone
chargers and other stuff running on the 120volts...but for some
reason, you need 12 volts DC in the apartment. Maybe you
want to run a CB Radio, maybe something you have only has
a car charger on it. This is what you plug into the 120
volt AC cord running into your apartment/house so you can have
some 12 volt DC power.
I have
been looking for a portable TV for over a year, and they ALL
STUNK. I could not get one, could not recommend one till I
found, bought and played with this one. It draws ONLY 9
Watts of power. Its reception is "DARN GOOD" with
the little antenna that comes with it but I bought
THIS ANTENNA for $8.50 With the external antenna (the $8.50
one) this thing picks up a huge amount of channels, and the TV
even came with the antenna adapter to go from a large external
antenna (coax screw) to a push type F connector. This is
NOW MY Storm and Disaster TV. THIS SHOULD BE YOUR #1 STORM
AND DISASTER TV, and its a DVD player for the kids too. 9
WATTS...that is an insane small amount of power. The TV
also has an internal battery will last 2.5 hours...but with me
it'll always be on one of my external batteries. TV
will be your #1 source of news and information in a disaster.
If the 7" one is sold out, get the 9" version here. This TV
will be your #1 TV, I guarantee it. I cannot say how
BEYOND IMPRESSED I am with this thing.

Roadpro 12V Battery Clip-On and Cigarette Lighter Adapter $5.02
If you have a car old enough it might not have a
12 volt power outlet in it that is on all the time, it might
require the key to be in the 'on' position, which draws a lot of
other power, so you don't want to do that. You just open
your hood, clamp this on your car battery and you have a
cigarette lighter power outlet ready to go. Plug in the
inverter, run the power cord inside the house, plug in your cell
phone and LED lights and small fans and you have light,
communications and cooling.
A nice version of this can be found at Radio Shack as well but
it costs 2x as much.
Wagan 4-Way 12V Automotive Socket Extender $10.46
Invariably you are going to plug in more than one
thing into your car's 'cigarette lighter' or 'power port' and
you are going to want a very good, strong and sturdy power
outlet. You plug this into your car outlet and now you
have 4 heavy duty power outlets. This has been one of my
favorites for years, it features big contact plates inside that
are all nickel plated and the case is made of a strong plastic.
Only place you might find this (other than here) is at Harbor
Freight.

Click Here for the Black Version.
Lights of America 4-Watt Power LED G16 Globe Bulb, Bright
White $9.65
4 Watts is MORE than enough in a dark room.
This has a light output of about 240 lumens, that's brighter
than many 80 lumen tactical lights. When you use this bulb
you are SIPPING energy off the inverter and the car battery.
That is what you want to do. You are not trying to light
the whole darn house like it was before the blackout. You
want 'enough' light in the room. Put one of these in 5
rooms and you're drawing 20 watts. This LED bulb will do
it well. I've used it for several years. This is an
excellent "Room Light" Note: on Amazon it says its a 2
watt light, its really a 4 watt light. See below for real
2 watt LED lights.
<HARRIS PHOTO> See what I do with this. Click here.
Home Design, Juicy, 15 Inch Tall, Desk Lamp, Chrome/White
Acrylic Details $21.92
I have a lamp here...sounds silly. Lots of
people don't have 'lamps' or the lamps are not suited for taking
a low wattage LED or CF light bulb and putting "Light On The
Table." So I searched high and low for the right type of
lamp to use a low wattage light bulb in an emergency and this
gooseneck lamp is perfect. It can shine light on
something, or sideways or bounce it off the ceiling. This
is keep it simple at its best. This lamp is also available
at Wal-Mart and other stores for the same price or cheaper.
Keep your eye out for stuff like this at yard sales or thrift
stores. This light is sitting on my desk right now as I
write this.
Bayco SL-512 12-Volt 13-Watt Fluorescent Work Light $12.54
For Home Battery banks, I always want the smart
charger ON, maintaining the battery 24/7 and I usually want you
to have a LIGHT ON powered by the battery 24/7. When the
power fails, its easy to find your battery bank. You might
not want to leave an inverter on all the time to power an LED or
CF light bulb, in that case, this light works on direct 12
volts. It'll stay on all the time and if your inverter
takes a dump, wire gets loose, something goes wrong, you have a
light AT your batteries that you can use to diagnose what is
wrong.
<HARRIS PHOTO> See what I do with this. Click here.
Equus 3721 Battery and Charging System Monitor $16.74
I like simplicity and this is simple. Its
on EVERY battery bank I have ever done and friends and students
have done. It just sits there plugged into a cigarette
power outlet on your battery bank and it tells you at a glance
with RED, Yellow or GREEN PLUS what the state of your
battery bank voltage is. Plus it has a great backlit LCD
display volt meter giving you a very accurate voltage
reading...but with just a quick glance at it as you are going by
it you know that you are in the green. If you see this
turn yellow or red, you know something is draining your
batteries. This use to be available at Walmart, but now
they have a new one I don't like as much.
<HARRIS PHOTO> See what I do with this. Click here.
E-Z Red S101 Battery Hydrometer $8.64
A volt meter might fool you, a charger might fool
you, but there is one thing that will never fool you as to if a
flooded lead acid battery is charged, and that is a Hydrometer.
It measures how 'thick' or 'heavy' the acid in the battery is.
You pull the caps off each cell, and suck up the acid into this
gauge (not batteries needed) and it tells you the state of
charge of that particular cell. If all cells are REALLY
charged, it will so it. If you have a bad cell, it will be
very evident when you use this. A battery
with a bad cell will not be very good for you. This tool
is especially important if you are using 'harvested' batteries
or older batteries of an unknown source.
Plews 75-030 Auto Shut Off 2 Quart Capacity Plastic Battery
Filler $13.88
This thing makes LIFE so EASY when it comes
to filling up a battery! It automatically STOP at
the right level. You cannot overfill the battery.
The STOP at the end of the filler SHUTS OFF quickly so there is
NO DRIPPING battery acid!! Yeah. You get the unit
over your battery vent, you push down, your distilled water
flows in and it stop at the right level and it does not drip.
How much easier could you want it to be. This is a
must have item especially if you have golf cart batteries.
If you have Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) batteries, or Gell Cells or
AGM batteries, you do not need this. Only deep cycle
marine batteries, car batteries and golf cart batteries.
Superior Pump 91250 1/4 HP Thermoplastic Submersible Utility
Pump $47.99
This pump only draws 460 watts so it will work
off an 800 watt inverter or bigger just fine.... or you can
carry buckets up the stairs. This is an over 30 gallon per
minute problem solver!! Lets see you do 6 five gallon
pails of water up your basement stairs a minute.
OMG... if you have a sump pump then you know exactly my feeling
when I say that NOTHING will screw up your day FASTER than sump
pump that is NOT working.
Makita UC3530A Commercial Grade 14-Inch 15 amp Electric Chain
Saw with Tool-Less Blade And Chain Adjustments $199.99
You now have a mobile battery bank in your truck
(from video above) and you are trying to get out of Dodge to get
to your mothers, your children, you wife or to the hospital and
the road is blocked!! Now you know why Steven Harris says,
"When a disaster happens, you are stuck right where you are."
but Steven Harris told you how to make a mobile battery
bank and now he's telling you that this electric chain saw and
your mobile battery bank and 1500+ watt inverter will run this
chain saw incredibly awesome and you can cut up any tree in your
path, get a rope on it, and pull it out of the way with your
truck, and you can get to where you need. NO GAS needed,
NO oil mix, no pulling and pulling and pulling. Just plug
it in and rip through the wood with your inverter and battery.
Truly, this is the closest you are going to get to a light
saber. I own and use multiple electric chain saws for 20
years. I love 'em.
MinnKota MKR-19 Circuit Breaker 60A Waterproof $35.94
We are going to run a twisted set of thick wire
from the front battery of your car / pickup to the battery bank
in the back. If that set of wires gets hit by a high rock,
or curb you are going over or it gets shorted together you'll
have a dead short on your vehicle battery and the wire will glow
red and melt and short circuit worse and easily cause a vehicle
fire. Instead of putting in a fuse, also listed here, I'm
using this circuit breaker. That way if it shorts, the
breaker will switch everything off. Its water proof so it
can go under the hood of the car. Amazon and the internet is the
only place I've seen this.
Coleman Cable 16-Foot Heavy-Duty Truck and Auto Battery Booster
Cables with Polar Glow Clamps, 4-Gauge $39.95
There is hardly anything worse than a cheap pair
of jumper cables. These are heavy duty 4 gauge jumper
cables. These are 16 feet long, go to this page and you
can select from the drop down menu a pair of 25 foot cables.
I suggest the long ones. I show how to use jumper cables
and your car to recharge your battery bank in the Battery Bank
Video (above). Not only can these be used to charge your
home battery from the car, but if the car battery is dead, you
can jump the car from your marine battery you have at home.
Without a pair of jumper cables, your car and your battery bank
are 2 separated worlds that cannot help each other.
Connect them together and have 2 is 1, 1 is none.
Bucket Boss Jumper Cable Bag $12.30
Jumper cables are made of copper, and copper
likes to corrode and when it does it does not make as good of a
connection as when its fresh and clean. Keep your valuable
jumper cables you just purchased out of the rain and weather and
keep them protected. Get this nice simple bag that keeps
them all wrapped up and stored easily so when you need them you
can get to them fast and use them and KNOW they are going to
work and are in good condition.

3M Scotch Super 33+ Vinyl Electrical Tape, .75-Inch by 66-Feet
$4.74
Next to duct tape, electrical tape fixes
everything. If you solder two wires together and don't
have the time or desire to put heat shrink tubing around them
then you wrap them up tight with electrical tape. It'll
work and work good. If its a connection for a few months
or a year or two...electrical tape will work, if its a
connection you are making for 10 years..then use heat shrink
tubing. Available at all hardware stores or big box
stores.
American Terminal AT-31604 60-40 Rosin Core Solder (4 Ounces)
$7.25
How can you solder two wires together without
solder. Since I had the irons and the heat shrink tubing
here, I put the solder here as well. Might as well get all
the stuff at once.
Available at all hardware or big box stores. Make sure its
ROSIN CORE or you'll have to get solid solder and a thing of
flux to dip it in.
Neiko 175 Pieces Solderless Wire Terminal & Connection with Wire
Stripper Crimper Tool $11.38
This video, podcast and page is all about
batteries and inverters and with those you have wire. This
little kit is a great option for putting 2 wires together if you
are not going to solder them and then shrink wrap them.
This is normally a neater connection than a wire nut, but not as
fast to do. Its a good kit to have incase you are going to
have to make some modifications or fixes. Way more money
for this at Radio Shack. Harbor Freight might have
something like this. I used this kit several times while
making the battery bank videos, especially for hooking up a cord
to the light base for the LED light in the mobile battery bank.
Its a bargain and a huge time saver. If you are going to
make a mobile battery bank, as I say in the video, get TWO of
these kits. They will save you a fortune over buying these
at Home Depot or Ace Hardware!
Iso-Tip #7971 SolderPro 50 Butane Soldering Iron $25.95
This is probably one of my favorite soldering
irons, its also at Radio Shack. You can see the propane in
the clear bottom. I almost never use an electric soldering
iron any more because I don't want to wait for it to warm up.
This warms up in seconds, ready to go in 10 seconds or less,
puts a lot of heat onto what I solder, which now is mostly
wires, and not delicate circuit boards. This is the
perfect soldering iron to have in the field. Runs on cans
of butane you use for any cigarette lighter that you get from
Walmart or anywhere.
Weller P2C Butane Soldering Iron $32.79
Weller is known for the finest soldering irons in
the world. They make a VERY nice butane one that you see
here. If you can't get the one above, then get this one.
Or if you just prefer Weller, get this one. This does not
have a clear portion to see the propane.
Worthington WT2201 Basic Brass Propane Torch $9.99
Those butane soldering irons above WILL solder 2
AWG and 0 AWG wires to terminals, but I don't like to wait
around, I want it hot and I want it hot now. So in the
video you see me using this propane torch. Its at Home
Depot, Lowes & Hardware stores for about the same price. Some
more, some less.
The BEST one you could buy would be this one.
Shoreline Marine Battery Marine Terminal Kit (Red/Black) $8.06
Marine batteries usually come with either 2 posts
or 2 posts and 2 screw downs. Either way, with inverters
we are usually hooking up to the screw downs, so if you need
more, you just put these around the posts and you have them.
These terminals are bare metal (not painted) and therefore you
can also CLAMP onto them with big CLIPS that are on 400-800 watt
class inverters, or with clips that you might have going to a
standard cigarette lighter power outlet. Like the RoadPro
one on this page. Also available at Walmart in the auto
section.
Sealed Power 4 AWG 19 Inch Battery Cable $9.85
In my video, I show you how to make cables, but
if you don't want to do that and just want cables to but 6 volt
batteries in series to make 12 volts, or if you want to put 12
volt batteries in parallel to have more capacity (more Ampere
Hours), then these will work fine.
Also available at Walmart in the auto section.
Neiko Wire Nut - Connector Assortment - 107 Pieces, with Plastic
Storage Case $8.49
2 is 1, 1 is none and 107 is plenty.
Invariably something is going to go wrong, something break or
come loose and you are going to have to join some wire together
quickly to get it to work, or to run a power line someplace or
whatever. Duct tape, zip ties, bungee cords and WIRE NUTS
are your friend. No quicker way to make a good mechanical
connection between two wires than wire nuts. This is a
great assortment at a great price. Won't find 'em this
cheap in Home Depot.
Anytime Tools 48 pc HEAT SHRINK TUBING WRAP SLEEVES ASSORTED
SIZES $6.99
Well you've soldered two wires together, instead
of using a wire nut, because you wanted a really good mechanical
high current connection. Now you need to cover up that
exposed soldered wire so it does not hit something. Slide
over a piece of this heat shrink tubing and heat it with a
match, or a cigarette lighter or your butane soldering iron
above and it will shrink and hold your new connection and
insulate it as good as its going to get. Very overpriced
for this stuff at Radio Shack.
Ancor Marine Grade Electrical Heavy Duty Tinned Copper Lugs (all
sizes and prices)
You need pretty much 3/8" hole for everything we
do on this page. You'll need (qty 2) 0/2 Gauge to connect
from terminal to terminal for each set of golf cart batteries.
You'll need 4 of them to connect a 12 volt battery to a 12 volt
battery. You'll need 6 gauge to connect the battery
in the front of your pickup to the battery bank in the back of
your pickup. You get the 0 or 2 AWG wire and the 6 AWG
wire from Home Depot or Lowes. They'll cut it for you in
the wire department, just tell them how many feet of it you
want.
Allway Tool Inc. Mp Stainless Steel Mini Wire Brush Smb
Wire/Scrub Brushes $5.53
You can't hook up your mobile battery bank to the
front of your vehicle to be charged unless the battery terminals
and the nuts and bolts there are nice and clean, or you won't
get a good connection. This wire brush makes quick and
easy work of cleaning up the battery terminals under the hood of
your vehicle. You can also buy these in the paint section
of Home Depot.
Midland 75-822 40 Channel CB-Way Radio $76.24
In the video I show you how to take DC power from
your car or mobile battery bank and how to run that 120 volts
from the inverter through a LONG extension cord onto your
kitchen table or living room. There you hook up lights,
small TV, AA battery chargers, radio etc... However.. .if you
have something that is ONLY 12 volts DC power, and your car is
300 feet away by extension cord, use the
Schumacher PC-6 120AC to 6A 12V DC Power Converter $17.54
(above) and convert that 120 volts coming from your car back
down to 12 volts so you can run something simple like this CB
radio inside your house. Also.. .if your father in
law is at your place, and he ONLY has his car charger for his
phone with him...he can recharge his phone at your place during
the disaster. That Power supply has a lot of uses...
and this was the CB radio I have in my disaster kit that I have
used extensively and used in the video as a 12 volt DC power
example. Make sure you have a GOOD
external antenna like this one if you are going to get the
radio, it will screw into the handheld unit where the DC cable
is.
Equus 3300 Hands-free Digital Multimeter $10.92
In the mobile battery bank video (above) I have
you connecting the
WAGON 4 WAY DC OUTLET (above) to the mobile battery bank.
To do this, you have to clip off the DC plug and
crimp on wire connectors (above) and when you do this you
don't know which of the terminals is positive because the wires
are black. So you have to use an OHM meter to check the
continuity of the wire to KNOW which one is positive, it takes
10 seconds and is easy, I show you in the video but to do that
you need just a simple, plain, easy to use, inexpensive
multimeter and this is one of those. For about $11...you
can't go wrong and it won't let you down.
RESCUE TAPE Self-Fusing Silicone Tape - BLACK $9.95
OH this stuff is INCREDIBLE. In the video,
I cover up some connections with the
3M Electrical Tape listed above, and its good stuff... but
this is so much better. You wrap it around your electrical
connections and it fuses to itself, it become all one piece,
just as if you had put a piece of heat shrink tubing over it but
a lot easier. This can be used to fix radiator hoses
and other car related stuff, that's why its called rescue tape.
DO NOT test this on your fingers to see if it works, your two
fingers will become one. If you are going to cover
up your electrical connections and want them 100% water and salt
proof for 10 years or more...then get this stuff.
Get a 6 Pack of the tape for $22.95 Here and get
HUGE 2" wide by 36 foot long rolls in any color here
Startech HC102 Self Adhesive Cable Tie Mounts (Pack of 100)
$10.24
In the videos I use these all over the place to
hold down wires and to keep them from flapping around, to run
them around the box and to just keep everything nice and neat.
These are adhesive and you can put a wood screw right through
the center of them and into the back of the board on the bottom
of the lid on the mobile truck battery box. Get them
at home depot or Lowes in smaller quantity (and more expensive)
or buy a bunch right here, get some of the zip / cable ties
below as well.
TEKTON 6233 Cable Ties, 4 inch, 500-Piece, 5 Colors $5.48
I think I paid half this amount for 20 or 50 of
these at Home Depot to make my videos...and here you can get 500
of them, in 5 colors for just about $5. Don't even bother
burning the fuel or the time to go to the store to get them, get
a 10 year supply of them right here and color code your battery
box with these. These 4" ones are smaller and work
PERFECT for the cable tie mounts above.
Allstar Performance Universal Two Wire Connector with 12" Loop
$4.40
I use this in the video for the mobile battery
bank solar panel. I put one of these connectors on the
battery box, and one on the solar panel, and then I make solar
panel DC voltage extension cable with 12 gauge red and black
wire (twisted in a drill) and put these connectors on them so
its easy to plug in my solar panel to the truck, and to have it
on any side of the truck I want... I have 25 feet of wire to
work with. You'll need THREE of these to do the mobile
battery box. Two are needed for the project, you need a
third incase you mess one up :) Nah...just get 2 of
these. You'll be fine.
RoadPro RP73002 10" 12V or Battery Dual Power Portable Fan
$22.22
If you listened to me on the TSP show on
Battery Banks (above) you heard me clearly say, that you heat or
cool THE PERSON. You don't heat or cool a whole room just
to cool you. A fan blowing on your face works great for
keeping you cool, especially when you are running on 1 Marine
Battery for your Home Battery Bank. In the Home Battery
Bank Video I show the simplest battery bank which is DC only, no
inverter. This fan will work great for that application.
Its a DC fan....just for you. It also run off D cell
batteries so you can use the NiMH Charger (below) and the
Tenergy D cell NiMH rechargable batteries in it and move it
around. Keep it simple. If you are not going DC only
and using an inverter, I suggest you get a 120 volt version of
this fan.
10" Swivel Battery Operated Fan with AC Adapter $29.99
This is the same thing as above but it is a 120
volt AC fan AND its a D Cell battery fan, and it takes 8 D cell
batteries. So this would be a good fan for an
emergency. I really think you can get a good 6" or 10" AC
fan cheaper from a local store, but its winter here and there
are no fans on the store shelves.
Keep an eye out for good small AC fans on sale when its summer
time.

Powerex MH-C800S Eight Cell Smart Charger $54.95
Jack Spirko has stated to
me on the air that this is his FAVORITE AA/AAA Charger as well.
Its Jack and Steve approved !!
Storacell by Powerpax "AA" 12 Pack Battery Caddy, Yellow - Holds
12 "AA" Batteries $4.95+
These are the most awesome battery holders I have
ever come across, I use them all the time, AA, AAA, C, D, 9volt,
CR123, you name it, they have holders for the batteries or sets
of the batteries. Want to hold 12 AA battts ? they got it, want
to hold 6? or 4? they have it. This link will
give you an entire page of ones to choose from. Stay with
the POWERPAX brand, its 100% Harris Approved.
Most of you know I'm not a big fan of energizer,
but they have it 100% Correct in this 7 LED headlamp. Its
has red LEDs and lots of bright white LEDs for near and far, it
has 4 different modes it switches between and it has a REAL
PHYSICAL SWITCH. So when its OFF, it is really OFF.
Its not 'on' but drawing a small amount of current waiting for
you to press the 'on' button. That is called a 'soft
on'. This head lamp has a HARD Switch that turns stuff
100% on or 100% off. It has low light mode for long
battery life and it has a LIGHT 'EM UP mode for plenty of light
NOW. Its made for contractors so its durable as heck and
can take a beating. It does run on 3 AAA batteries.
I wish it was AA's, but its not. So make sure you get some
of the Eneloop AAA rechargeable batteries above. This is
an excellent "Small Light" and the bright mode is good, but not
quite emergency light bright, but close. If you are
running AAA battery items in a small 'kit' then this is the
perfect light to go with the Maglight XL-200 AAA Light below.
I run this on 3 AAA
eneloop batteries all the time. This main use of this
light is for 'finding a lost child'. Its too much light
for normal stuff. Its an emergency light. If you are
running AAA batteries in a small, portable kit, then this is the
perfect flashlight to compliment the Energizer Head Lamp (above)
The important thing about this is that it SIPS energy (for 31
hours) on low and it will provide 'enough' light in an entire
room or more than enough light when directed onto something,
plus its got its bright mode for finding something outside in
the dark.
* NEW
Coast HP17TAC High Performance Focusing 615 Lumen LED Flashlight
with Tactical Strobe $66.55
* NEW
*
If you do want to play the brighter is better game, then this
flashlight from Coast will do it. Preppers, the $25
maglight above is PERFECT. It will light your house and
work area just fine. If you are Law Enforcement or Search and
Rescue then you might consider this flashlight because it too
uses 3 D Cell batteries but its 615 Lumens, about 3x more than
the maglight flashlight. This light also focuses from a
bright FIELD of light, lights a whole room up EVEN, to a spot
light that goes the distance. For preppers on a budget,
don't get this.
Rayovac Sportsman LED Lantern $28.79
* NEW
*
There are 825 reviews of this on Amazon, 782 are 5 or 4 Stars !!
You need 3 types of lights. 1. Small Light: 1/2 watt or less (30
lumens or less) flash lights for doing small things.
Reading, looking in drawers, walking around the house etc..
2. Emergency Light: 2, 3 watts or more LEDs, 80, 180, 250,
400 lumens for finding lost children in the night type of stuff.
3: Room light or Area Light. Something you can put in a
room with 4 people and light the place up decently because you
are going to be there and you have energy to spare. If are
charging D Cell batteries from your car, you have energy to
spare. This lamp uses 3 D cell batteries and will use the
D Cell Tenergy batteries above just perfectly. This is a
'room' type of light.
Coast 4 D Cell 375 Lumen LED Lantern w/ Varible Brightness
$37.99
* NEW
New Trent iTorch IMP52D 5200mAh External Battery Charger for
ANYTHING USB! (Improved version with 15% more compact size at
5200mAH than IMP500) $32.95
5200mah
for $34 is better than 1800mah for $19
One 100 foot cable and one 50 foot cable should
be good for most people, that way you can run up to 150 feet any
way you want. You might run 50 feet into your house and
100 feet into your neighbors house or you just might need all of
the distance for yourself, especially if you have an electric
chainsaw (which I love, because they are so simple, and always
work without gasoline).
Coleman Cable 8-Outlet Power Strip, Heavy-Duty Design, with 6-Ft
Cord $22.03
I have been using this outlet for at least 8
years. It use to be at Walmart, but its not anymore.
Its just an awesome outlet strip with 8 outlets on it. 3
of them are widly spaced so you can get big wall wart
power plugs into it without blocking other outlets! Its
got a nice heavy cord that wraps around the whole thing neatly
and its a nice bright neon green so you can easily find it in
your box of emergency supplies when you are getting it out in
the next blackout. This is a piece of quality that will
NOT let you down.
Coleman Cable 3-Prong To 2-Prong Adapter, Grounding Outlet
Converter, 2-Pack $4.38
You cannot have ENOUGH of these. I have one
plugged into the end of almost every extension cable. If
you are doing something improvised at someone's house with
power, half the time they still are in the dark ages and only
have two prong outlets. My laptop power supply ALWAYS has
one plugged into it. It does not need 3 prongs. I
commonly use 2 wire extension cords when I travel for my laptop
and other electronics and these allow anything to plug into
these nice thin, easy, low power cords to get electricity.
If you think you need 4 of these, then get 8. The only
thing more expensive than these at about $2 each is NOT having
one when you need it.
Leviton 692-W 15 Amp, 125 Volt, Triple Cube Grounding Adapter,
White $4.21
Take one of these and plug it into the 2-Prong
Adapter (above) and plug that into the 15 foot extension cable
(below) and you have all the outlets you need from your
inverter. You are using just a few hundred watts, the thin
extension cable (below) can easily handle that, now you have
plenty of outlets to plug in your cell phones, ipads, androids
and other small electronics to get charge them up. Like
the orange T adapter, you can plug as many of these into
themselves as you desire to have all the outlets you want.
Stanley Cord Max 15-Foot 3-Outlet Indoor Extension Cord, White
$8.97
This is cheaper at Walmart or Target, even Home
Depot or Lowes, but I use the heck out of these. They are
all you need for running electronics from an inverter.
This one is 15 foot, which is the size I usually get. They
also come in 6 and 9 foot at the stores. Want to
light a place up? I string a bunch of the 6 footers
together (with the ends tied together) and then I plug in LED
light bulbs (with an adapter) into the cord and I have an LED
light bulb ever 6 foot and you can string this up in a room off
the floor. Use this cable with one of the 2 prong adapters
above and you can run your laptop to any outlet you desire, if
15 feet is not enough, use 2. I use this in air ports when
I travel all the time. There is never an outlet
close enough.

First Aid: What is most
important and why?
Throughout the history of the soldier there is one thing that
will disable a soldier or a person in the wild or a survival
situation quicker than anything else and that is a skin problem.
Skin is your largest organ and it easily gets cut, gets a rash,
blister or irritation and that can prevent you from
walking, it can get infected and it can just be downright
painful. First you need items to treat &
protect your skin, then you need to be able to stop bleeding and
heal that wound, then you need stuff that will treat your
digestive system (diarrhea & vomiting), then you need to have
items for your respiratory system (breathing). Items to stop
coughing and to protect you from inhaling irritants and
particles. This page also include pain killers because
those deal with both your skin and wounds that make you bleed.

SKIN: WOUNDS AND BLEEDING
Even though you are more likely to get a blister
or a rash that becomes a problem, people put a great deal of
first aid emphasis on wounds and bleeding, probably because its
so scary. Seeing blood just triggers something inside of
us that says BAD. Protecting your skin is such a serious
subject that I have divided it into different skin areas,
general, lips, feet etc... I try to start with the
cheapest and simpler items and then move towards the more
complex. Which is why this starts out with Medical
Tape and Female Napkins. Noting will stop bleeding quicker
and easier than those two. You'll never use a Band-Aid
again. !!
Durapore Medical Tape, Silk Tape - QTY 12 - 1 in. x 10 yards
$16.79
Durapore is the strongest of the 3M surgical
tapes. Since I have started using this in the 1990's I
have never use ONE Band-Aid since then. When I get a cut
or a scrape or something bleeding, I just wrap this tape around
it. It cover and closes up the wound and does a good job
of taking care of the blood. If its really a bleeder I put
some paper towel under the tape over the wound or I cut a piece
of the Maxi-Pad (below) and put that on it and then tape over
it. There is hardly a quicker and easier way to take care
of a small to medium sized wound than this tape. Hold down
a piece of paper towel, maxi-pad, 4x4 gauze, or other dressing. HARRIS PHOTO of Me BLEEDING & using this.
DON'T LAUGH - THIS WORKS !
Always Infinity Heavy Flow with Wings, Unscented, Individually
Wrapped (Pack of 64) $13.89
What is the job of Female Napkins / Maxi Pads ?
Its to absorb BLOOD. Its specifically made to adsorb blood
and a lot of it. These are individually wrapped and
"sanitary". There are more of these made in on day in the
USA than there are of 4x4 gauze bandages in an entire year.
Use the whole thing or use the scissors below and cut a piece to
size and tape it on down. This is as inexpensive as
it gets for making your own bandages and dressings.
Prestige Medical Fluoride Scissor $9.90
These are an extremely high quality pair of
scissors. These are TOP rated and inexpensive. Use
these in your medical kit / any kit to cut anything from
bandages, to clothing, to fixing tents or tarps. Get these
in 5.5" or 7.5" sizes.
Nexcare No Sting Liquid Bandage Spray $4.62
A simple yet proven spray liquid that protect a
wound similar to a bandage. Spray it on and let it dry.
Multiple applications are suggested. Spray / Dry, Spray /
Dry etc... Works really good on rashes and skin wounds on
elbows or knees or other areas that flex and that a bandage
won't adhere to very well because of movement. This is
just one skin care tool in your first aid box of knowledge and
tools. Its increasingly hard to find in stores and
people are ordering it online now.
20 cc/ml 10 pcs Syringe w/o Needles New Sterile Disposable Luer
Slip Tip $9.98
If you have a cut, a wound, a rash, a scrape or
something that needs to be cleaned and wash and especially needs
a good stream of water to clean it out because you have a lot of
foreign material in there then there is no easier way to do that
than with a simple 20cc Syringe along with some Sterile Water
(below). Just open the syringe, open the sterile
water, pull the water into the syringe and then irrigate the
wound and clean it up. Use along with sterile pads (above)
to help clean up.
Sterile Water for Irrigation, USP - 250ml Bottle - Bottle $7.83
This is a 250ml bottle of sterile water that goes
along with the syringe above. There are larger bottles of
sterile water available,
like 500ml bottles here, but this 250ml bottle fits into a
small medical kit just fine and its more than enough to do most
jobs. Need more than this, you better be getting some
professional medical treatment soon. In fact, get it
anyway, if you can.
3M Vetbond Adhesive, 3ml Wound Closure Skin Adhesive $19.00
Got a deep cut that might need a stitch or two but you aren't
near an ER to have it done ? Glue it shut. Or close
it with some Steri-Strips (above) and then put the glue on it to
hold it extra shut. This is an offical SKIN-GLUE. In
emergencies people have used regular super glue for closing
wounds. There is a more expensive version of this made for
humans, but this is the exact same stuff made for animals and
its a lot cheaper. Read on the Amazon feedback on how
people have used it on themselves. If you'd desire the
human version it comes in a
single use vial here for $17.95 (Dermabond)
Celox V12090-35 Blood Clotting Solution, 35g Pouch $22.41
Celox is a blood coagulant powder, the 35 gram pouch is for
major bleeding, a gun shot would, a knife wound, when you have
more blood coming out than you have ever seen before you rip
this open and pour it directly INTO the wound, you fill it up
and pour it all over the wound and you apply direct continual
pressure on the wound. This stops the wound from bleeding,
along with your pressure. You can then put a pressure
dressing (below) on it and then you are going to have to
seek medical treatment. If you have been in the military
and been through the Combat Life Saver or TCCC course, then you
know what I'm talking about. This is not a fix, this just
stops you from bleeding so you can get yourself alive to
professional trauma based medical care. There is a 10 pack
of
smaller 2 Gram packets of Celox HERE that you can use on
smaller cuts and bleeds that are being stubborn, something that
would require from 0 to a few stitches.
Kerlix Type Gauze Rolls 4"X4 yds, Sterile, 4/bag $4.55
This is sterile dressing wrap. Can be used to
insert into and to pack a bad wound to stop it from bleeding,
can be wrapped around a wound on its own to stop bleeding, can
be wrapped around something that is over or covering a wound,
infection or area of irritation, can be used to make an
improvised sling for an arm. Can be tied tight over
another roll of kerlix to make a compression bandage.
You can cut it and put it in an antiseptic like iodine solution
to wipe a wound area clean. This is the 1001 uses / do-all
first aid item.
Israeli Bandage Battle Dressing, First Aid Compression Bandage
$5.75
For just under $6.00 you get an incredible piece of trauma first
aid treatment here. Its sterile, vacuum packed and
FAMOUS. The Israeli Battle Dressing (IBD) is used world
wide for treating combat wounds. It wraps around any part
of your body, has all of the stuff built into it so you can pull
and tie it tight and its got a large, very adsorbent compression
bandage on it for stopping blood flow. If you are worried
about combat type injuries, then the IBD,
the H bandage for $7.50, the Celox and the CAT Tourniquet
are what you want. If this IBD is sold out
you can get this IBD Here
C-A-T Combat Application Tourniquet $27.95
This is the official tourniquet of the US Army, and for once,
they picked an excellent one. I have been formally trained
in the use of the CAT as well as the IBD (above) and the use of
Celox (above) and I can tell you that this is THE item to have
to stop heavy bleeding in an extremity (arm or leg). It
can be used 1 handed, its operation is very intuitive, but still
practice with it. Wrap it around , cinch it down, turn the
windlass till the blood flow stops and then tuck the end of the
windlass into its holder. If the CAT is sold out then
buy this version HERE.
SKIN: CLEANING AND DISINFECTING
Keep your skin clean so you won't get rashes. Keep your
skin clean so rashes and cuts won't get infected. Wash and
disinfect your rashes and your cuts and your blisters and other
skin problems. STOP nothing from being a small problem,
stop small problems from being a big problem.
Band-aid Brand First Aid Hurt-Free Antiseptic Wash 6-Ounce $6.98
This is especially good for children, or big
babies, the wash does not sting or hurt the wound plus it has a
mild pain killer in it to take away the pain of the wound.
Works very good for cleaning up scrapes and road rash.
Alcohol 99% Isopropyl Pint $7.50
Have to clean up the area around a wound?
Take some cotton balls, or pieces of maxi-pad (above) and soak
them in alcohol and start to clean up around the affected area.
Get the dirt, the blood, the grime and the germs off the area
around the wound. Generally alcohol is not used for
cleaning the inside of the wound itself, but for cleaning up
everything around it. Don't forget to use this on your
hands to clean up your hands before you start helping someone.
Wipe your hands with this and then leave it on, wait a good 15
seconds, for it to kill the germs on your hands.
Hydrogen Peroxide Antiseptic Solution 16 Oz $4.45
Hydrogen peroxide is used on top of wounds
itself, its good to get any dirt and debris out of the wound and
for it to kill any bacterial that is on the surface.
You remember this stuff from being a kid, your mother would pour
it on a wound or a scab and it would fizzle up with white foam
and bubbles. This is a disinfectant used for the outside
of your body.
First Aid Only Povidone-Iodine Infection Control Wipe, 10-Count
Boxes (Pack of 20) [200 PADS] $26.68
Do NOT use betadine if you have an allergy to
shell fish or iodine. What do you do if you have a cut
that is 'healing' and it gets red and infected, you can use
betadine directly on the cut / wound area to help kill infection
and clean it up. Then it should be covered with a clean
bandage or surgical tape (see above for tape) (see below for
more wound coverings) If you have a cut or scrape
that is getting infected, clean it 2x to 3x a day with betadine
and put a fresh bandage over it. Do you need some
sterile wash water for cleaning your hands or a wound? Put
ONE of these wipes in a quart of clear water, shake it up, and
let it sit for 30 minutes. Then use that water for
cleaning or washing a wound area. DO NOT DRINK THIS WATER.
The iodine concentration is way to high. This is
just a quick and easy trick.
Povidone Iodine Swabsticks 1's - 50 Per Box $8.45
This is exactly the same as the above described
betadine but its in a swab stick rather than a wipe in a pouch.
You can this to make clean WASH water just like I describe above
with the wipe.
Alcohol Prep 2ply.
200 Count Alcohol Prep Pads $4.11
If you have to clean up an area around a new cut
or a wound that has already started healing, and its infected,
you can use one of these alcohol prep pads. These should
ALSO be used by people who are ALLERGIC TO IODINE.
Also, use these to also clean your hands before you eat or
before you treat someone else. These are less than half
the price of Purell Hand Sanitizing Wipes and do the same thing.
Neosporin Original Ointment First Aid Antibiotic Treatment 3
Pack Value Pack $18.49
Note: this is a 3 pack for this price, which is
good. I mention above about using iodine to clean up
wounds, but there is nothing better putting an actual
anti-biotic onto the wound. Before modern antibiotics
people died of infections from cuts that became infected.
Even as simple as a poke from a rose thorn killed people.
Antibiotics will prevent an infection from being a problem and
in a blackout situation where the infrastructure is down, and
you are not showing daily, you will get dirty and things will
get infected. So iodine on wounds is good, antibiotics are
excellent.
HART Health Triple Antibiotic Ointment, 0.5gm, 25/box, 3-Box Set
$13.19
This is exactly the same as the above however
these are individual packets that you can use once, or twice, or
you can give away to other people to treat their wounds.
You might have a tube of antibiotics for yourself and
family, but the packets to give away or to treat other people.
SKIN: CUTS, SCRAPES, IRRITATION, RASHES AND
CLEANING
Simple and easy treatments for the small problems that happen to
your skin before they become bigger problems. Many times
small irritations can be very distracting for adults or a
constant annoyance for children. A little of the right
type of ointment can take care of a lot of those problems.
Bag Balm Medicated Oinment 10oz $8.99 (or less)
Bag Balm got its start as an ointment for the
chafed, cracked skin on the utters of milking cows. It'd
heal up the skin pretty quickly. This works very well on
anything that is itching, irritated and needs some salve on it.
If this does not cure the irritation or skin problem you'll have
to try the hydrocortisone cream below. This is a
10oz tin, so its not something that goes into a little kit or
that you carry with you when you travel. There is a great
1oz tin of this, just a smaller version of what you see on the
photo. The 1oz is just enough for a few problems and small
enough to travel with you.
Don't' forget the 1 oz tin. Its awesome for small kits! $4.05
Porters Liniment Salve - Two Pack 2 oz. Tins $16.49
This is for a 2 pack, so its about the same price
as the bag balm, and it does basically the exact same thing, but
it comes in a thin round tin that travels very well. Some
people like Porters, some like Bag Balm, it depends on what part
of the country you are from and what was on the store shelves
when you were a child.
Aveeno 1% Hydrocortisone Anti-Itch Cream, Maximum Strength,
1-Ounce Tube $9.37
Rashes, Irritations and irritating things that
just wont go away and they are red and sore or they itch and
itch and itch are things that need to be treated with a
hydrocortisone type of cream. This is especially effective
at treating ALLERGIC reactions to something. My wife had
an allergenic reaction on her ear from a new ear ring. Bag
balm and Porters would not stop the itching so I had to run to
the store to get some hydrocortisone and the itching stopped in
30 seconds. However, this would not treat, dry,
cracked skin like the bag balm or porters would. Different
problems, different solutions.
Hydrocortisone Cream Anti-Itch 25 Pkts/Box $3.15
Again, above I have the tube of the cream and
here I have the small packets of the hydrocortisone cream.
I like the small packets because you can put them in a very
small kit, just enough for a few days, and you can also give a
packet to a friend and you can still have 2 or 3 left in your
little travel kit. Someone who has an itch that
won't stop will pay / trade heavily for a little packet of this
miracle cream that stops itching.
Desitin Maximum Strength Paste (Pack of 2) $10.48
Wow..if there is one thing that will give your
skin the most irritating rash its having messy bathroom
conditions. These conditions will occur when things stop
working or you find yourself way from modern toilets.
Desitin is a thick zinc oxide cream and its used to treat diaper
rash, and you know what creates diaper rash. Well if you
don't clean yourself up good enough each time you'll get the
same thing. If you've every heard the saying, "that person
is an irritating A-hole" then you know from where that saying
comes if you've ever had an irritated dumper.
Desitin is also commonly used as a sunblock on your nose if you
are particularly sensitive to the sunshine and your hat does not
effectively cover your whole face.
Diphenhydramine HCl 25 Mg Allergy Medicine and Antihistamine
Compare to Active Ingredient of Benadryl Allergy Generic - 400
Tablets $9.99
If you are having an allergic reaction to
something even a bad rash, and the bag balm, porters and the
hydrocortisone cream is not working, you might have to take
medication like this. This is normally used to treat
seasonal allergies, however it does work on other allergic
reactions as well. It also makes you sleepy, so its good
as a sleep aid in a disaster, you might have trouble sleeping.
It also has mild anti-nausea side effects so if you are puking,
or feel like it, it might give you some relief.
Uncle Bill's Sliver Gripper Tweezers Survival Camping - Key
Chain or Bottle NEW! $5.92
These are up here because of my good friend Matt
from my home town. He says he's a big baby when it comes
to splinters but he can run 50 miles and does triathlons and
such. So I found the most excellent pair of sliver
removers available with the highest ratings there are. I
like them so much, I have some on the way for my personal
medical kit. Nothing like a stuck blister to get
infected, red, swollen, and then all full of puss, just so the
body can force it out on its own, unless you get blood poisoning
first.
SKIN: LIPS
Your lips are part of your skin, and when they do get chapped
and cracked and sore it makes drinking, talking and eating
more difficult. It hurts. Protect your lips from
getting chapped and help them heal when they do. These are
very small, inexpensive and so very effective. This is an
important part of any medical kit.
EOS Tangerine Medicated Lip Balm Sphere, .25-Ounce (Pack of 3)
$8.97
Sore, cracked and chapped lips can quickly make
you miserable. It can make it painful to drink and eat and
is just annoying as heck. You're in a disaster, last thing
you need is more annoyance. Especially if its your
children that are getting annoyed. This is one of my
personal favorites for a lip balm. It tastes good, smells
good and comes in a nice hard plastic shell. This is
'medicated' lip balm so it'll help heal your lips if they've
already gotten sore.
Blistex Lip Medex External Analgesic/Lip Protectant 0.25 Oz
(Pack of 6) $10.80
This is the same as above, but its better for
sharing. I don't really want to use your lip balm after
you've put it on your sore, infected lips. However this is
a little tin of lip balm. You put your finger in it and
then rub it on your lips. So if have to share with someone
its a lot less gross than sharing your stick of lip balm.
Blistex Medicated Lip Balm, Regular, SPF 15 - 3 ea $8.39
I've put this here because this is one of the
major brands that you'll recognize. Any of these 3 will do
just fine, but this is a 3 pack, and now you can have one
all to yourself, plus a spare, and one to give away to a good
friend in need.
SKIN: FEET
Of the skin on your body probably the area that can get hurt the
quickest and stop you the fastest is the skin of your feet.
If its painful for you to walk, you are slowed way down or you
are not walking and moving. If you can't walk you can't
keep ahead of the zombies. One day in wet boots or shoes
can give you tremendous problems. Always take time to dry
your shoes and socks at night, or when ever you can if you are
in a wet environment. Make sure you have a GREAT pair of
boots and they are broken in and CHANGE YOUR SOCKS !!
Clean Socks !! are one of the #1 ways of keeping your feet
healthy... it is that simple. Ask ANY soldier. Go to
wikipedia and read about
WWI trench
foot.
Tinactin Antifungal Cream for Athlete's Foot $10.69
A foot fungal infection (athletes foot) with the
skin between your toes falling apart and forming open sores is
something that can become debilitating very quickly. Very
quickly you can find yourself NOT being able to walk. If
you can't move, you can't keep ahead of the zombie herd.
If you get into a wet foot environment, your boots or shoes are
wet all day, you can get this. I use to have this problem
a long time ago, but this stopped it dead in its tracks.
I've not had it in 15 years. I like the cream because you
can put it on the affected areas and it stays there, and I can
goop it on to put more medicine on it. This is probably
the best option.
Tinactin Athletes Foot Powder Spray (Pack of 3) $20.30
This spray can is the same thing as the stuff
above, but you spray it on. It goes on with a very nice
cooling feeling. Plus, if someone else has a fungal
infection, and you have to treat it (like your child) you don't
want to be rubbing your fingers all over their infected feet, so
its easier just to apply the medication a spray can.
The cream is the smallest, most compact form of the medication
and would work best for traveling. There are many other
brands of this same medication, this is just one that I used
that worked very well for me.
Band-Aid Advanced Healing Blister Cushions $3.67
Blisters are a scourge, they will debilitate you
quickly and prevent you from either walking our effectively
using your hands. Cushioning gel pad relieves pain while protecting
the blister. Waterproof, superior adhesive stays in place for
multi-day use. Flexible form conforms to skin for greater fit
and comfort. Seals out water, dirt, and germs that can cause
infection.
Blister Medic by Adventure Medical Kits $8.53
There is a wide range of products available.
This is nice because its got different cutouts for different
blisters. However I am NOT a fan of things that are
'pre-made' and I prefer for you to have the basics to take care
of things yourself. So if one of the Band-Aid items above
does not work, because they are so simple, then get the moleskin
below and use it to cut our or tape up your own blisters on your
own body to your own needs.
Dr. Scholl's Moleskin Plus 24" x 4 5/8" Padding Roll (Pack of 4)
$19.87
This is what I'd rather you have, a roll of mole
skin, now you can cut out what ever shape or size you so desire,
paste it where ever you desire. On your foot, hand, or any
other place that is getting a blister. Cut out squares of
it and put it in a zip lock bag and put it in your medical bag
etc...
Jaybird and Mais MOLESKIN Moleskin Roll (2 in. wide) $21.91
This is the same stuff as the above, the the
above stuff is 4.5" wide, and this is only 2" wide, so it might
fit in your medical kit a lot better than the larger box of
moleskin above.
In this case...someone else's words are better than
mine. I'm training for a (walking) marathon & a half in hot, steamy
Southern California. There's nothing like being in the California
sun for 7 hours straight with all your moving parts constantly
moving. I've had major problems with chafing, severe swelling,
blisters and terrible heat rash on my feet. I've used petroleum
jelly, powder, etc., etc., etc. None of them worked as well as this
product. I did 22 miles two days ago and re-applied after mile 12.
NO heat rash, blisters or chafing in the areas where I applied it.
Was able to do 10 more miles the next day on feet that didn't hurt
-- for the first time. The product is pricey -- no doubt. But when
I'm nursing a blister, I can't really put a price on being able to
move without pain or injury when I'm training or during an event
Men's HeatGear Crew Sock 4-Pack Socks by Under Armour $20.98
CLEAN & DRY SOCKS, CLEAN & DRY SOCKS, CLEAN & DRY SOCKS.
It cannot be said enough, that is how you PREVENT your feet from
getting blisters and fungal infections in the FIRST PLACE !!
You do not have to treat and fix what did not happen. DO
NOT hold cotton socks, they hold water. DO NOT use WOOL
socks, they too hold water (not as much as cotton) but
they stink in comparison to using a modern synthetic sock.
You'll be taking your socks off and putting on new ones and
letting your other ones dry on a line or on your pack as you are
moving. The synthetics will dry many times FASTER than
wool. You want a good 3 or 4 pair of GOOD SOCKS.
This is a 4 pack of socks and Under Armor is famous for their
synthetic cloths.
Carhartt Mens Work-dry Lightweight Western Boot Over-the-calf
Sock $10.00
Carhartt is about as famous of a name as Under Armor, and they
are known for their durability so if they are selling a sock for
you to wear in your boots you know it'll be comfortable, padded,
thick and do a good job. CLEAN & DRY SOCKS!
Nuby 4 Pack Safety Pins, Colors May Vary $2.99
Well, if you get a blister from wearing your boots or shoes, and
you are just one of those people who have to pop your blisters,
then you'll want a pin to pop it, and nothing works better than
a safety or diaper pin. Make sure you heat it up with a
match or lighter to disinfect it before use it, and let it cool
down before you use it. Safety pins should always be
part of any emergency kit or travel kit because you are always
going to have a wardrobe malfunction at sometime and a safety
pin will save the day.
SKIN: CARE, PROTECTION AND PREVENTION
A little protection goes a LOT ways to keeping your skin from
getting injured, and then infected. A little prevention is
always a good habit.
No-Rinse Shampoo - 16 oz $6.05
This is used in 1000's of hospitals. Its a
simple liquid wetted to your hair and it will get the oils off
and make you feel cleaner. Towel dry your hair
after. Not as good as a real shower but by far better than
having icky and oily hair. Remember your scalp is part of
your skin and it needs to be maintained.
No-Rinse Shampoo is ready to use that serves the
need of bedfast patients, convalescents, the elderly and others
where rinsing is difficult. It can be applied, lather and towel
dry. Penetrating foaming action does the cleaning. It eliminates
odor and it is safe, comfortable, convenient and alcohol free.
No-Rinse Body Bath with Odor Eliminator - 16 oz. $10.99
Used by NASA and ALL the Space Shuttle Flights.
Used in 1000's of hospitals. Mix some of this up with
water and use a cloth to wash down your entire body. NO
RINSING needed. Get the oil, stink and grime off you
quickly and easily. Just towel dry when you are done.
Keeping your skin clean is a very important part of preventative
first aid. Rashes, infections and skin irritations can be
debilitating and they only get worse.
Pampers Sensitive Wipes 12x Box With Tub 768 Count $25.26
If you are in an environment where you cannot
take a bath or shower then the next best thing is baby wipes.
You can clean your entire body with baby wipes. I know
people who have used them to keep clean for over a month.
These are not a long term solution to not being able to shower,
but they are a great short term solution, especially if you have
children. 768 wipes for $25 is a great price. This
comes with 1 dispensing box and 11 sealed packs of wipes to
refill the box with.
Dewalt DPG20L All Purpose Synthetic Leather Palm Spandex Back
Velcro Wrist Work Glove $13.34
You've heard me say this before, the #1 most
important thing to have after a disaster like a tornado,
hurricane, or earthquake is a darn good pair of gloves.
Gloves turn your hands and arms into machines. Hands
without gloves get cut, poked, sore, blisters, irritated etc.. With a pair
of gloves you can handle ruff lumber with nails, broken glass, tree limbs, brush, a blown
down home in pieces and anything else. Get these gloves or
any of these
Heavy Leather Gloves on Amazon or at your local store.
Make sure they are tough and that they FIT WELL!!
SafeTouch Nitrile Exam Gloves, Non Latex, Powder Free $9.47
Do you have to wash poison ivy off of someone?
Are you cleaning up a something messy, human or non human, then
you'll want to keep your hands clean and sanitary.
Nothing does this quicker and easier than these non-latex
gloves. Click on the link, and you can select your size of
glove and you can order by the box or by the case.
SKIN: PREVENTION OF DAMAGE AND IRRITATION
If there are two things that can come and get you from the sky
its sunshine and mosquitoes and other biting insects. Sun
burn can be come so bad that it actually becomes
sun
poisening.
Banana Boat Sport Performance Sunscreen Lotion $6.44
Many people are not out in the sun a lot, only
when going to the beach. We inside our homes, inside our cars,
inside stores, inside work, well in a disaster you might be
outside a lot. Sunburns can happen in hours depending on
your skin and location. Sunburns can not only be painful
but crippling especially when your feet get sun burned.
Having smaller tubes of sunscreen with you is recommended and
larger bottles of it for home storage. SPF 30-50 will work
fine. A little bit of prevention will go a long way.
Banana Boat Kids SPF 50 Family Size Sunscreen Lotion, 12-Fluid
Ounce $8.94
This is just a larger bottle of sunscreen at a
very affordable price, and its got a pump dispenser on it so its
easy to get out just what you need and to apply it. Using
sunscreen lotion is many times cheaper than sunscreen sprays.
The bottles of lotion also put a lot more sunscreen in a much
smaller container than a spray on sunscreen.
Extreme Outdoor Hat UV 45+ Sun Protection (in OLIVE) $16.50
One way to avoid having to use sun block is not
to let the sun hit you. Wear a Sun Hat like this one that
keeps teh sun off your face, head and back of your neck.
Wear light but long sleeve shirts and pants. This will
help with biting insects. Your long and light shirts
and pants and this hat should be treated with the Permethrin
below. This will TOTALLY prevent mosquitoes from
biting you through your cloths.
Repel 6-Ounce Sportsmen Max Insect Repellent 40-Percent DEET
Pump Spray $11.44
The rule (and the science) is permethrin for
clothing, and DEET for skin. NO WAY can it work in
reverse. DEET interferes with the receptors on the
mosquito from homing in on the CO2 and water vapor from your
breath and your skin. In a sense...they can't 'see you.'
The higher the concentration of DEET, the longer it lasts on
your skin. This is up here because mosquito bites are
irritations and can become infected or are just plain annoying.
In a post hurricane situation with a great deal of water, and no
power, no infrastructure, mosquito populations can EXPLODE.
You are already dirty, not showering daily, have a stressed
immune system from 'stress', different diet etc...
Sawyer Premium Permethrin Clothing Insect Repellent Trigger
Spray 24oz $15.89
Permethrin is a synthetic version of a natural
plant enzyme found in the Chrysanthemum flower. It will
prevent mosquitoes, ticks, ants, flies, chiggers, and midges
(no-see-ums) from getting to you
through your clothing. When they land on your cloths or
try to bite or sting through the fabric they get contaminated by
the enzyme and they die. This is 100% safe for human.
Its NOT safe for fish nor cats. So don't spray either one
of these, but on your clothing it is very safe. It lasts
many MONTHS and dozens of washings in the washer. There is
a great video of it on Amazon, just click on the photo or the
link above to go see it. This has been use by the military
on soldiers uniforms for decades.
Zorrel - Insect Shield Apparel Long Sleeve Tee Shirt $31.35
If you don't want to treat your own shirts and
pants, you can buy them pre-treated and ready to wear.
These will survive over 70 washes and still be effective.
Works on mosquitoes, ticks, ants, flies, chiggers, and midges
(no-see-ums). Want more than a shirt? There is
a complete line of
Bugs Away Clothing HERE
DIGESTIVE
SYSTEM: STOMACH -
DIARRHEA & WORSE
The first thing that can get you the quickest and the most
severe is a skin problem. The second problem is your
digestive system. If you have constant diarrhea and or are
puking your brains out, you are not going to be very good.
A lot of diarrhea can be caused by unsanitary conditions.
Constant diarrhea (dysentery) can be caused by viral infections,
bacterial infections, or parasitic infestations. Dysentery
is debilitating and can lead to death from dehydration in less
than a day (depending on severity and climate). Most
commonly you'll get Dysentery from contaminated water.
However simple diarrhea can be caused from stress, nerves, lack
of sleep, poor diet, change of diet, change of water source
etc... these medicines will treat these simple diarrheas.
Kirkland Signature Anti-Diarrheal Loperamide Hydrochloride (same
as IMODIUM A-D) 2 MG Caplets, 200-Count Bottles (Pack of 2)
$10.08
If there is one thing that will make your life
instantly miserable then that is diarrhea. Its
debilitating and if you are on the move its got the prospect of
making a real mess and contaminating your cloths and stuff you
come in contact with. Continual and uncontrolled diarrhea
can dehydrate you quickly and can even lead to death
(dysentery). At the first signs of diarrhea follow
the dosing instructions on this bottle and take the medicine.
"Imodium" is the strongest anti-diarrhea medicine available over
the counter.
Pepto-Bismol Upset Stomach Reliever/Antidiarrheal Chewable
Tablets, Original, 48-Count Boxes (Pack of 3) $20.37
Petbo Bismol is famous and has been a proven
stomach treatment for decades. Have an upset
stomach, take Pepto, feel like puking, take Pepto, have diarrhea
take Pepto. It DOES stop diarrhea but it is by no means as
strong of an anti-diarrhea medicine than the Imodium (above).
I listed the Pepto here in the chewable form because the large
pink bottles of the liquid would take up too much room in an
emergency kit.
Prilosec OTC Acid Reducer, Delayed-Release Tablets $23.59
Some people have a real problem with acid reflux,
and if you've had it, you know how miserable it can be. It
can even affect the quality of your sleep, or inability to
sleep. Changing diets as you might in a disaster may lead
to a person who has his acid reflux under control normally to
have it pop back up again. A little acid reliever goes a
long way to making this situation better. Prilosec
takes a few hours to take effect, so its not an immediate
solution, but once it takes affect, it will block you from
getting acid reflux for over 24 hours. If you
want a quick acting acid reliver then
get some of the chewable tables HERE.... but it only works
right now, it does not prevent future acid reflix.
Gas-X Thin Strips Antigas, Extra Strength, Peppermint Flavored
Strips, 18 strips (Pack of 6) $23.80
Your stomach typically produces 'gas' when it has
a hard time digesting something. In a disaster your diet
may change significantly and you might get gas. This can
be uncomfortable for you because of pressure and unpleasant for
those around you, or stuck in the car or shelter with you,
because of the odor. Gas-X stops this gas production
almost instantly giving you fast relief. These strips are
so thin that they hardly take up any space at all. Great
for small emergency kits especially if you travel.
Get a cold, get the flu, pneumonia, bronchitis or just inhale
too much dust and fine particles and you can get yourself a
nasty cough. Cough too much and it starts to hurt and get
worse. A basic cough suppressant will stop this cycle and
allow the lungs to start to heal. Many times this will
also allow the person to get a good night of sleep, and everyone
else around them. Serious infections like flu, pneumonia
and bronchitis are going to probably require medical attention
and antibiotics for the underlying infection. But when its
1AM in the morning and you or your child can't stop coughing
this will help keep them stable until you can hopefully get them
to assistance the next day.
Delsym Adult 12 Hour Cough Relief Orange $8.52
Coughing can be debilitating. It can cause
significant lung irritation and even pain. Delsym is
widely used in hospitals for coughing. I know people in
cancer wards that use it to treat cancer patients who are having
coughing problems from either the cancer or the cancer
treatment.
Robitussin Peak Cold Maximum Strength Cough and Chest Congestion
DM $7.56
Robitussin is another anti-coughing medicine.
It has been around for a long time and works good. I have
the top 3 anti-coughing medicines listed here because everyone
knows what works for them. Some people just prefer
one over the other and as long as it works for you, that is what
is important.
Sudafed Pressure + Pain, for Adults, Maximum Strength, Caplets
24 caplets $10.18
As the old saying goes, "your nose runs and your feel smell."
Having a runny nose can lead to constant coughing plus you
having to blow your nose all of the time, and many times blowing
outinfectious mucus and body fluids on to nose tissues,
toilet paper or paper towels.Sudafed does a great
job of stopping this however due to new laws to get the
most effective nasal decongestants you have to go and see your
pharmacist. They have them behind the counter now and you
can get them without a prescription.
3M 8511 Particulate Sanding N95 Respirator with Valve, 10-Pack
$15.37
One way to keep your respiratory system healthy
is to keep particles out of your lungs. 3M N95 masks are
famous and they do an excellent job of keeping you from
breathing in stuff you don't want to breath. In a disaster
you might be in a very dusty environment and or you might be
dealing with sick people. When you talk, you are
'spitting' saliva. This saliva can be infectious if the
person is sick. So keeping other peoples germs from
getting into you, and keeping your germs from getting onto other
people is a good idea. The "cool flow" valve on this
mask makes it a lot easier to exhale through than the mask
below.
This is just the medical version of the above mask.
They are both N95 masks. This one is a bit cheaper, but it
does not have the cool flow mask. If you are in a
working environment like cleaning up a torn down house, use the mask
above with the vent in it for your exhaling, it makes it a lot
easier to breath. If you are just around the house taking care
of sick family members than this mask will work just perfect.
PAIN RELIEF
Damn that hurts. We can get something that hurts so
easily. Tooth ache, cut, blister, broken or sprained
bones and fingers. Pain is a signal to the body that
something is wrong. Well once you know something is wrong,
stop the pain. It hurts. Below are some of the
common over the counter pain medications.
Ibuprofen / Advil etc.. are anti inflammatory drugs. That
means they reduce swelling. If you smash your finger its going
to swell up. That swelling up presses on nerves and it hurts.
Taking a medicine to reduce the swelling will reduce the pain.
These are 2 big bottles at a great price.
First Aid Only Ibuprofen Tablets, 50 2-packs, 100-Count Boxes (Pack of 3) $13.77 Big bottles of
ibuprofen might not fit in your portable or travel medical kit
very well so I have also included some little packets of
ibuprofen that will fit in the little places where you might
need them. I do this for each of the medications here.
Acetaminophen is the medicine better known as
Tylenol. Tylenol blocks the pain, its called an analgesic.
This works good on headaches, broken bones, wounds etc... Most
people know what works best for them in what situation, Tylenol or
Advil.
As I said above...big bottles might not always be
what you need. Of course yo can always put the pills
into a little ziplock bag but going into a foreign country might get
you asked the questions, "what are these?" "Tylenol." "yeah..right...come
back here please".
Naproxen Sodium (Aleve) use to be a prescription
medication but now its Over The Counter (OTC). In simple
terms, its considered a stronger anti inflammatory than Advil or
Ibuprofen is. Note that you normally take only ONE of these at
a time, NOT 2, as you do with Advil or Tylenol. 2 a day
is normally the maximum dose and where as Advil and Tylenol might
work for only 4-6 hours, Aleve will work for up to 12 hours.
This is the same as above, but its the name brand
"Aleve" and its in small packets for easy travel and smaller medical
kits.
Water Jel Burn Jel, Pain Relief 25 ea $15.99
This work great on MILD BURNS. Like Sunburns, in fact, read its
feedback, people praise how well it works on sunburns. Disney
uses it to treat guests at their parks who get sunburned.
This contains a pain relieving medicine called Lidocaine, 2%
concentration. This gives instant relief, for very serious
burns, like 2nd degree blistering burns and worse, use the Burn Free
below, see my photos of my fingers. NOTE: This has 2%
Lidocaine, most other sunburn gels are only 0.5% lidocaine.
I've had Burn Free since the early 1990's, so over 20
years. I got it a long time ago from a friend and had this
entire 'burn kit' and through the years I used it here and there
when I burned my fingers on a soldering iron or something, a few
minor burns here and there. Then in Oct of 2012 I was BBQing and the
steaks fell and I reached to grab the grill and I put my fingers
right on the back of the BBQ, I grabbed it, a full 400-550F and
direct pressure. I knew I had 4 to 5 really bad burns. I
put cold water on it, then grabbed some ice cubes and drove 5 miles
to my shop where I had an emergency kit with the Burn Free in it.
NOTHING killed the pain, not cold water, not cold ice, it hurt hurt
hurt like hell. Not until I got the burn free on it was there
any relief from the pain, and the Burn Free was 20+ years old.
I had to keep burn free on it constantly for about 5 hours, but when
I woke up the next morning, there was no pain...none...zero.
They never hurt again, kept their blisters for almost 2 weeks and
healed beautifully.

EMERGENCY
MEDICINE BOOKS
These are some of the best books written on
emergency medicine and you. What skills you need to know
and have and train on for when there is a disaster and someone
is hurt, and you have to fix them...or.. you are hurt and you
have to treat yourself.
This is one of the most famous medical books for the
average person out there. Its on my book shelf. It
should be on yours, along with the one below. Hesperian's classic manual, Where There Is No Doctor, is perhaps
the most widely-used health care manual in the world. Useful for
health workers, clinicians, and others involved in primary health
care delivery and health promotion programs, with millions of copies
in print in more than 75 languages, the manual provides practical,
easily understood information on how to diagnose, treat, and prevent
common diseases. Special attention is focused on nutrition,
infection and disease prevention, and diagnostic techniques as
primary ways to prevent and treat health problems.
Oh how I HATE dentists, but the thought of having a
dental problem and there is no dentist around is even scarier...
This book should be a critical part of your preparedness library and
as with ALL of your books you should READ IT. This 2012 updated reprint features information on Atraumatic
Restorative Treatment (ART), a way to fill cavities without the use
of a dental drill, as well as updated information on other training
material and resources. All Hesperian books are regularly updated
and reprinted to reflect accurate medical information. Community
health workers, educators and individuals from around the world use
Where There Is No Dentist to help people care for their teeth and
gums. This book's broad focus makes it an invaluable resource. The
author uses straightforward language and careful instructions to
explain how to: examine patients; diagnose common dental problems;
make and use dental equipment; use local anesthetics; place
fillings; and remove teeth.
Dr Bones and Nurse Amy are two of Jacks favorite
people to have on The Survival Podcast. They are also going to
be at the Self Reliance Expo where I (Steven Harris) am also going
to be a speaker. The #1 Amazon Bestseller "survival medicine handbook" is meant
for those who want to ensure the health of their loved ones in any
disaster situation, from hurricanes to a complete societal collapse.
Integrative medical strategies abound for situations in which
medical help is NOT on the way. This book will teach the non-medical
professional how to deal with all the likely medical issues they
will face in a disaster situation in plain English. You'll learn
skills like performing a physical exam, care of traumatic injuries
and infectious disease, and even how to suture a wound!
Got a drug in your cabinet and you don't know what it
does ?? what its used for ? what its side effects are ? and its a
disaster and you are in despite need to treat something ?? The PDR
(Physicians Desk Reference) is the book that will tell you what
every drug is and what its used for. So if you don't remember
what the name of that antibiotic was...but you have 4 bottles in
front of you, this book will tell you which one it is.
EMPTY BAGS TO
HOLD YOUR MEDICAL SUPPLIES
These bags are EMPTY...they are for YOU to make
YOUR medical kit. I do NOT like pre-made medical kits
because the are made for the lowest common denominator.
Plus you really don't know what is in it. When you build
your own medical kit, then you KNOW what is in it, because you
bought all of the item and you bought all of the items that YOU
NEED. Maybe you get skin rashes really easy, and you
need 3x the cream in a 'normal' medical kit.
This kit is EMPTY..there are no supplies in it.
This is a standard US Military Medical bag, when you open it up it
opens up into about 4 different pouches and each one can contain a
different selection of medical supplies you desire.
Antibiotics in one, skin treatment in another, medical tape,
bandages in another etc... If you have MOLLE gear, than this
will strap into it and away you go.
This is just an inexpensive and simple duffel bag
(comes in many colors) and it has a big inside area and a bunch of
outside pockets for various items. You don't have to put water
bottles in the outside pockets. Its just simple,
inexpensive and flexible and that is why it is listed here.
I DO NOT like buying pre-made medical kits,
however I do realize that you might not have the time select all
of the items you need for a medical kit and that something
pre-made and a little expensive is better than you having
nothing. You could have a hurricane 3 days away and you
are taking our advice and having Amazon send you stuff by
OVERNIGHT (costs $3.95 for Prime Members) and one of those
things you might be ordering is a medical kit. So here are
a few good ones.
There is so many different items in these kits that
you are going to have to click on the link and go read what is in it
on amazon because its too numerous for me to list here. All of
these kits are nearly 5 stars, many of the reviews have a item by
item list of what is in each one. Keep in mind, this is just
the basics, you may very well want to add to the kit with what we
have listed above. A kit made for 'everyone' just might
not have a thing in it for 'you.' Make it your own kit, even
if you do get one of these pre-made and ready to go.

BONES, JOINTS
& MUSCLES
Bones can get broken, muscles get swollen, pulled, bruised and
joints get sore, overworked and need support. Bones
getting broken need to be stabilized, some swollen muscles need
to be wrapped and other joints that are sore or have problems
work a lot better when you have a brace to support them.
These are foam coated think aluminum sheets.
They are perfect for making splints for arms or legs or something
that needs to be immobilized. You an even take
your pair of medical scissors (above) and cut this to make it
smaller so you can have a finger splint. SAM Splint is THE #1
brand name of this item and this will do well for you.
This is exactly the same as the above but this is the
generic version of the SAM Splint. I've used the SAM splints,
and they are awesome, but I've not used the generic version.
They have great ratings and should work fine but I wanted you to
have a lower priced option for your medical kits.
I don't have wrist or knee problems so these are hard
for me to relate to, but people who do have wrist or knee or joint
problems can tell you how valuable these are. If you get your
wrist or knee hurt, which, is very possible in a disaster,
especially if you are sleep deprived, dirty, stressed, worried and
helping in a rescue (without professionals around) and you hurt
yourself. A good brace will make all the difference between
you being able to help and work and you not being able to help or
work.
Elastic wraps are another DO ALL. Have a wound
with some gauze or or blood absorber on it and you need to wrap it
up tight to help prevent further bleeding ?? wrap an ACE wrap around
it. Have a swollen or injured ankle or knee, wrap it up.
Need a sling for your hurt or broken arm, make a sling from ACE
wrap. Want to look like a mummy for Halloween ??? use
ACE wrap.
Well there are ACE wraps, which, have sticky pins to
hold it tight (or you can always use diaper or safety pins ABOVE)
then there are these wraps. These are COHESIVE wraps and
cohesive means it sticks to itself. All you have to do is wrap
this around what you want wrapped tight and it will stick to itself,
no velcro or pins or anything. Its very convientant and yes,
you can unwrap it.
The above is 12 for $20, but that might be all you
need, and enough for your friends as well, but if you want more,
there it is, 36 for $26, less than a dollar a roll....and it comes
in colors.
If you are cold, wet, tired, with children crying, trying to listen
to the radio, keep dry, figuring out where the toilet paper is and
where you are going to use it, and you have to patch up someone
who's hurt... do you really need to wonder how you are going to
secure the bandage to itself ? Use this stuff.

(illegal in USA to drink, but legal to make car fuel w/ free
permit) then what I'd do is make moonshine and store it for a
